Controversy Surrounds Hockey Hall Of Fame Selections

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

The Hockey Hall of Fame is an argument waiting to happen. It doesn’t matter the year. It doesn’t matter who gets elected and who doesn’t.

That is the charm of the conversation and the passion of those who follow the game and believe only what they happen to believe. And that is why, if you open up the phones on a talk show and say “Hockey Hall of Fame,” the lines are forever jammed.

Any day of the year. Any time. There is nothing that automatic. And nobody is ever wrong with their fervent and very personal views.

Mats Sundin is officially a Hall of Famer today and Brendan Shanahan is not. Therein is the joy and the aggravation of the announcement. It depends whose side you are on. In Toronto, you’re excited. In Mimico, you’re irate.

It depends which players you care about and which ones you have no interest or belief in.

I’m a Shanny fan, always have been…  The players who got in are deserving of entry, lots of blame will be laid on the shoulders of Scotty Bowman and Larionov for Shanny not making it this year.  He (Shanny) is a first ballot HOF fame level of talent, but it didn’t happen…  Always next year.

What a dumbass Uncle Tom viewpoint. “Oh it’s great that it pisses people off how dumb the selection process is because then people talk about it!”

nobody is ever wrong with their fervent and very personal views.

Except for the fervent idiots who can’t give a good reason why Brendan Shanahan was not a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. Those people are wrong and their opinions mean less.

Of course there’s always going to be people arguing. At any given time, you can find somebody fervently and very personally arguing in favor of Aryan eugenics.  The point is to make it so that only the crazy assholes and the trollish devil’s advocates are arguing that it didn’t go the way it should have.
