Coaching Style Will Matter To Lou Lamoriello

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

No, of course Lou Lamoriello did not seek his players’ permission to dismiss Barry Trotz, are you kidding me?

But you also couldn’t be more naive if you believe that feedback elicited during the players’ exit meetings did not influence the Islanders’ supreme hockey leader’s decision to cut ties with the coach who had brought the franchise its greatest run of success since the Dynasty.

Those meetings, according to sources with knowledge of the events, did not include the threat of mutiny. But we are told that enough players — and ones who mattered — expressed frustration over the team’s single-dimensional, safety-first, safety-last, grinding approach to the 82-game marathon in this era in which high-end skilled athletes dominate the regular season.

Chances are that these conversations ratified Lamoriello’s independent, eye-test analysis rather than opening his eyes to fissures that might have developed during this longest season.

When it comes to Lamoriello and coaches, it is never about what has been accomplished in the past. It is always about whether Lamoriello believes he has a coach who can take his team to the next level. The next level always means the Stanley Cup.

Even though Trotz has already won one Cup, with Washington in 2018, that mattered about as much as it did to Lamoriello when he fired Larry Robinson in New Jersey a year and a half after winning the 2000 Cup.

A lot of fans I correspond with are dumping their tickets.  Mostly - many people got caught up in the new building hoopla and had dreams of offloading several games to pay for the season seats and then some.  (I got GREAT value for 2 extra seats to the first home game at UBS that helped offset the expense) but there were games this year which I could not give the tickets away.

Getting to the arena is SUCH a hassle during rush hour, causing the 7:30 PM starts.  Next year - they will have the big parking garage which opened for the John Mayer concert last week and it takes a half hour to emerge after the game.  Just like Yankee Stadium parking.

(though, once inside the arena - it’s FABULOUS)

So, with an aging team - and customer dissatisfaction which is NOT limited to the on ice product - and Lou is not getting younger, he had to make a change.

I hate to see Barry go.  But - did he want to stay?

I would be ok with Atilla the Hun being the coach - so long as we win.  I have faith in Lou

Now with this said - let’s focus on the big prize - which (I FEEL DIRTY) would be a Pens victory to eliminate the team from West 33rd Street to join their Leaf buddies.

Sorry to disagree with you Kas, but there is a lot of hate for Cindy and the Pens in Motown, for too many reasons to elaborate here. (Refs gave them our Cup in 2009).

Go Rangers!

The problem Lou is going to have is that he has an aging team and what decent coach is going to want to work for him when he fires coaches as often as most people let farts. He’s a fossil—he’s also got all these rules for players that has to also be a turnoff. Good luck with all that, Isles fans.
