Carl Hagelin Re-signs With The Washington Capitals

06/16/2019 at 4:32pm EDT

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed forward Carl Hagelin to a four-year, $11 million contract extension, with an average annual value of $2.75 million, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

“We are pleased to have signed Carl to a new four year contract,” said MacLellan. “Carl is a versatile player who can play on any line and is an excellent penalty killer. He is a proven winner and provides great leadership to our team.”

Hagelin, 30, a native of Sodertalje, Sweden, recorded 11 points (3g, 8a) in 20 games with the Capitals last season. Hagelin’s 2:21 minutes per game on the penalty kill ranked first among Capitals forwards since his debut with Washington on Feb. 23. The Capitals acquired Hagelin on Feb. 21 from the Los Angeles Kings for a third round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft and a conditional sixth round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. Hagelin recorded five points (1g, 4a) in 22 games with Los Angeles, who acquired him from the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 14, 2018. With Pittsburgh, Hagelin recorded three points (1g, 2a) in 16 games, finishing his season with 19 points (5g, 14a) in 58 games. The 5’11”, 186-pound forward’s 54.24 shot attempt percentage (704 shot attempts for, 594 against) ranked 15th in the NHL among left wings with at least 50 games played last season.

In 546 career games between the Capitals, New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, Hagelin has collected 241 points (93g, 148a). Selected with the Rangers’ sixth round pick (168th overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft, Hagelin’s 241 points rank 16th among forwards selected from that class.

A two-time Stanley Cup winner (2016 and 2017), Hagelin has 48 points (22g, 26a) in 128 career playoff games, which is tied with Alex Ovechkin for the second-most playoff games among the Capitals (Orpik: 156) and tied for the 14th most among active NHL forwards. Additionally, Hagelin’s 237:14 minutes of penalty kill time in the playoffs is the seventh most among active forwards.
