Bryan Murray Gets An Extension And New Title

01/13/2014 at 11:58am EST

OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators Owner Eugene Melnyk today announced the team has reached an agreement to extend the contract of General Manager Bryan Murray for two years to July of 2016. In addition, Murray has been named President of Hockey Operations. Murray will continue to act as the team’s General Manager for the next two seasons and will then remain with the organization for an additional two seasons in an advisory capacity.

The Senators also announced today the team has promoted both Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee to the position of Assistant General Manager.

“I am very pleased to have Bryan remain here in Ottawa for the next four years. Without question, Bryan stands among the best general managers in the National Hockey League,” said Senators Owner Eugene Melnyk. “Our drafting success and the emergence of so many young, dynamic players within our organization is a testament to Bryan’s leadership and wealth of hockey knowledge.”

“In addition, Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee have made significant contributions to our club’s many achievements in scouting, drafting and player development,” said Melnyk. “Bryan and I believe both Pierre and Randy have more than earned the opportunity to take on more senior roles in hockey operations. I want to congratulate Pierre and Randy on their expanded mandates serving together as our team’s assistant general managers.”

Murray was originally hired as the fifth head coach in Senators history on June 8, 2004. In two-plus seasons at the helm, Murray compiled a 107-55-20 record. In 2007, he led Ottawa to its first appearance in a Stanley Cup final series, losing in five games to the Anaheim Ducks. Murray returned to the head-coaching role with Ottawa on Feb. 27, 2008, relieving John Paddock, and posted a 7-9-2 record over the final 18 games of the 2007-08 regular season.

Murray was named general manager on June 18, 2007. Murray, who is the franchise’s sixth General Manager, was appointed executive vice-president of Senators Sports & Entertainment on July 1, 2009

“It’s exciting that Eugene has made this commitment to me and also for me to make this commitment to be part of the organization for four more years,” said Murray. “This team has come a long way and we have seen real growth over these past three seasons. I know that with the pool of talent we have assembled both on and off the ice and our desire to improve at every level, that we are on the right path to develop this team into a group talented enough to compete for championships.”

“Mr. Melnyk has made it very clear that he wants to be a champion, and that’s what we want for all of our fans. It is an exciting time for us as we see this team grow, and being part of that growth is a big reason for both of us to make this commitment.”
