Brady Tkachuk Still Unsigned

from Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

With center Elias Pettersson and defenseman Quinn Hughes nearing new deals with the Vancouver Canucks, Tkachuk is the last big RFA to remain without a contract.

He is upholding the Tkachuk family tradition of being really hard to sign.

Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk foreshadowed this outcome with candid comments to the media a while back. Brady is the cornerstone the Ottawa Senators are building upon, so he’s going to get paid.

Brady is a bulldozing power forward who impacts games many way. He likes it in Ottawa and is willing to settle there. He is expected to serve as the Senators’ captain for many years to come.

So it’s just a matter of when he gets paid and how. Speculation has centered on his desire to be paid significantly in lump-sum bonuses versus salary, which adds real-dollar value to the deal and protects him from a work stoppage.

As for the Canucks, they are nearing deals for Hughes (six years, $7.75 million average annual value) and Pettersson (three years, $7.7 million AAV).

It’s discordant to me to have read all of these
comments over the past couple of years about what a great “team guy”
and leader Tkachuk is.

And then see him be the sole remaining big name who isn’t signed
or in camp.

Admittedly I couldn’t stand Keith Tkachuk and
I find his sons at least as repellant.

But, to me Brady Tkachuk’s behavior here has been the opposite of a team-first leader (with his brother bizarrely inserting himself
into negotiations very publicly and sort of bragging about how it’s a family
tradition to hold out and that he in particular had a role in pushing his brother
to be more recalcitrant and demand more).

Here Ottawa is trying to emerge from their rebuild with Tkachuk considered an integral player. Does that give him leverage? Sure. But past a certain point all he is doing is hurting his team and teammates by being a prima donna and insisting on the absolute highest salary. He’s a winger. As important as goal-scoring power forwards are, it’s only one piece to a successful team.

It sounds like his team is “the Tkachuk boys” and not the Sens.
That it’s a fun family game to screw your team by holding out and squeezing every dollar.
