Bob McKenzie’s Final Draft Rankings

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
It’s a photo finish for the No. 1 spot on TSN’s 2022 NHL Draft Final Ranking and, by the slimmest of margins, it’s Juraj Slafkovsky over Shane Wright.
Five of 10 scouts surveyed by TSN ranked the 6-foot-4 Slovak left winger at No. 1, while four scouts slotted the Kingston Frontenac centre in the top spot.
The headline will be that it’s the first time this season — that includes pre-season rankings in September; mid-season rankings in January; draft lottery edition rankings in April; and now the final rankings in June — that someone other than Wright is No. 1.
Slafkovsky was ranked No. 5 at mid-season but used two stellar international performances, at the Olympics and the men’s world championship, to vault to TSN’s No. 1 spot heading into the draft in Montreal on July 7-8.
There are, however, two points worth noting.

I’d not been following these rankings
closely and was only familiar with half a dozen
to ten names.
It’s interesting to see even more logic to
SY picking Edvinsson and Cossa last year,
given the dearth of any similar players
projected to be taken in the first round this year.
Wait til next year, and the timelines of draft pick development
and of the core players on the roster begin to look too
far apart. Here’s hoping there is one more high, impact
pick next year, though.

I respect Bob MacKenzie, but Yzerman and Stones have their own prospect ranking list that’s about as tightly guarded as Fort Knox and the vault protecting the formula for Coca Cola combined.
It is becoming an event on NHL Draft Day: who is Yzerman picking?

McKenzie was always a trusted source on the draft. I hope some of that slipped as I really want Cutter Gauthier—-but McKenzie has him gone before the Wings pick.
The popular pick for the Wings seems to be Jonathan Lekkerimaki—a sniper who can skate—but unfortunately plays wing.
Regardless of whom the Wings pick—-I don’t see them here for at least another 3 years. By that time the older core will be entering their post-peak years already.
