Arizona Coyotes Statement On John Chayka

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- The Arizona Coyotes issued the following statement today regarding John Chayka.

"John Chayka has quit as the General Manager and President of Hockey Operations of the Arizona Coyotes.

"The Club is disappointed in his actions and his timing as the Coyotes prepare to enter the NHL's hub city of Edmonton, where the team will begin post-season play for the first time since 2012. Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL.

"The Club is moving forward and has named Steve Sullivan as Interim General Manager. He has the full support of the entire organization including team ownership, executive leadership, players, and coaches.

"The Club will have no further comment on the matter, as the Club remains focused on the opportunity to pursue a Stanley Cup."

This is odd. Either the team or Chayka is being less than forthcoming. It will be interesting when the truth comes out. He must have a gig lined up to walk away from 3 more years of his contract…..

The latest talk has him going to Buffalo in some sort of position with the Sabres and Bills.

Not at all a fan of ownership that
a) cuts the GM and player agent out of negotiations
on a contract and doesn’t even give them a heads-up
(I’m sure I’m missing plenty of inside dynamics but unless Chayka
did something personally or professionally egregious to ownership
this just looks totally arrogant and classless).

b) gratuitously takes the low road by repeatedly calling
the same GM they cut out of a core part of his job “a quitter”
as if to try and tar him and his good name as much as possible
around the league and beyond.

Who the hell are these people who just arrived and seem to think they
single-handedly invented hockey in Arizona and know better than
everyone else?

I feel similarly about ownership in NJ and reported insistence
on micromanaging every decision. Ironically the Pegulas in Buffalo
(If that’s where Chayka ends up) have developed a similar reputation.

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

According to multiple sources, Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo will ask NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to adjudicate the ugly divorce between the organization and John Chayka, thereby determining the executive’s future.

“This is a contractual dispute,” one source said Sunday afternoon.

After several days of silence, the Coyotes came out firing at their former president of hockey operations and general manager….

Here’s what I can best piece together:

Approximately one month ago, Meruelo received a request from another NHL owner to speak to Chayka. Initially, the request was denied. (There’s been a lot of speculation about the Buffalo Sabres, but I’m also hearing rumblings about New Jersey, although the Devils have hired Tom Fitzgerald. Word is Chayka will take time away before making any further comment or commitment.) Understand that Meruelo — up until this saga unfolded — was an enormous Chayka fan. He believed in the GM’s vision, extending him through the 2023-24 season, making the Coyotes a cap team.

Eventually, Meruelo relented and allowed the conversation. This will be a critical part of the process. He will argue that he was lied to about what was to be discussed and that Chayka said he had no intention of leaving. What, if anything, is in writing?

From what I understand, a Godfather-esque “offer he couldn’t refuse” was made.

Darren Dreger tweet,

Lots of speculation on the mystery team that expressed interest in potential hiring of John Chayka prior to today’s news.  Sources say that team is NOT the Buffalo Sabres.

Why am I not surprised that Buffalo ownership would be involved in this soap opera….It’s like the Pegulas & Eugene Melnyk are in a competition for most dysfunctional ownership in the NHL… confused

Screw the coyotes. What a joke of a way to handle this and take the low road.
