Confirmed, Anderson for Elliott

added 10:52am,

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired goaltender Brian Elliott from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for goaltender Craig Anderson.

Elliott, 25, has appeared in a team-high 43 games for the Senators this season, posting a 13-19-8 record with a 3.19 goals-against average and three shutouts. The Newmarket, Ontario native helped the Senators reach the Stanley Cup playoffs a year ago, compiling a 29-18-4 record with a .909 save percentage and five shutouts in 55 appearances.

“Brian is an experienced NHL goaltender,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “We look forward to having him join our team.”

I don’t quite understand this trade.  Both teams are pretty bad at this stage (as are the goalies).  Both players contracts are ending this season.  Anderson is a UFA at end of season while Elliot’s an RFA I believe.  Maybe they’re hoping that Anderson will be able to tag-team with Leclaire next year.  I’m obviously missing some intangibles on this one.  I would have thought they’d keep Elliot and at least get something for him with picks or whatnot if someone tries to sign him away.

Oh well.  The team can’t really get worse with Anderson on the team.

I really don’t get giving up on Anderson after a season where he was hurt and playing behind the worst defense in the NHL.  He was extremely good as the Florida backup and was the only reason the dive made it into the playoffs.  He was the only reason they made it to 6 games against the sharks.  I guess it’s their loss.  If Ozzie hangs them up after this season I wouldn’t mind seeing him backing up Jimmy.

Huh.  Didn’t see this one coming.  I mean,  it makes some sense—both goalies could use fresh starts—but I really was not expecting Colorado to give up on Anderson after last year.
