Afternoon Line

Does the coach need to be publicly questioned by the owner about his line combinations and power play scheme? Does the GM need to hear, along with the Capitals’ fanbase, that the guy who signs his paychecks thinks the star players with whom he negotiated massive contracts are not getting the job done? And if Leonsis uses these posts to communicate with his customers as a well-intentioned owner, might he be openly undermining his hockey department in the process?

-Stu Hackel of the Red Light at Sports Illustrated.  Read more and read the reaction from Ted Leonsis.

Right, because if Leonsis didn’t question what his GM or coach is doing… nobody would?

Does Leonsis sound like a moderately clueless blowhard in his posts about his team?  Sure.  Do those posts perhaps put more pressure on his GM and coach, PR-wise?  Probably.

So what?  A) It’s not like many people in the media, even in Washington, give half a rat’s ass what the Caps are or aren’t doing.  Leonsis could hurl racial epithets at Boudreau in every other twitter post and neither guy would get half the coverage and attention the Redskins would on an off day during week 6 of the regular season.  B) Maybe if either the GM or the coach would win something and not have their clubs choke badly in the postseason two years in a row, this wouldn’t be an issue.
