Afternoon Line

Colin Campbell was just on Fan590 and discussed the proposed rule changes, instant reply and a few other topics.

He also mentioned and I am paraphrasing here. “Maybe we should look at how the conferences are set up” and he used the Wings first and second round opponents as an example.  First in Phoenix then in San Jose, three hour time difference in each series.

I’m glad someone from the front offices recognizes and verbalizes the issue Detroit faces playing in the West.

It’s time to move them over.

Is the solution to move Detroit and Columbus to the Eastern Conference, as the only two eastern time zone teams in the West?  Can it work out to have two conferences with an unequal number of teams?

Can’t do North & South for a couple reasons: 1. Americans generally don’t like the connotation, especially in parts of the country where the NHL is still trying to grow the game enough for a few teams to succeed, and 2. What happens when 2 southern conference teams move back to Canada?

I worry about creating extra travel just for the sake of travel in situations that would take the Rangers to the West coast as often as the Wings have to go out there.

I say keep the Conferences as-is and use them for playoff berths (top 8 from each conference gets in), give the Prince of Wales and the Campbell to whichever team from each Conference finishes the regular season #1 in points, and seed the playoffs 1-16.  This way, Montreal would have had to go to San Jose for the first round.  (they were the league’s overall #19 seed, but still would have made the postseason under my recommendation for being in the East and would have become the #16 playoff seed).

The biggest complaint there is that it may unfairly make eastern or western conference teams travel more during the playoffs.  My answer to that is “tough shit, Nancy-boy”.

Mixing things up a bit would be a welcomed change.  I’ve never been a big fan of the current setup because I’ve always hated the abandoned conference names and the idea that expansion was critical for survival.

That said, if the league returns teams to QC and Winnipeg, teams like Minnesota and Buffalo would be probably get shuffled around a bit under the existing configuration.  Seeing them in a division with the likes of St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit would be pretty cool.  Kinda like the 86-92 edition of the Norris sans the Jets.

Some great thoughts here.
I love the idea of returning to the #1 vs #16 setup.
Or how about really shaking things up and allowing the top 2 seeds to choose who they want to play first? Talk about dramatic.

But a simpler solution to helping Detroit and C’Bus in the West is to divide the conferences into 2 divisions and then having to play out of your division.
This way both Columbus and Detroit wouldn’t have to travel beyond the Central Time Zone for the first 2 rounds.
It would also give the NHL a 50/50 shot at having a non-West coast team in the finals.
That’s not a shot against teams from the left-coast, but it makes it easier for TV times and viewership.

I think the only reasonable way to propose realignment would be to go with a MLB-style configuration. Rather than geographical conferences, have two “leagues,” and the divisions within the leagues are then geographically split.

Then every team would have a much more balanced travel schedule. Save for Vancouver. They will be totally effed no matter what.
