“This is a great honour to have bestowed upon me.  I took great pride in my hockey career, both on the ice competing towards a championship with my teammates, and off of the ice for the work that we did to ensure our fellow players enjoyed proper rights and benefits.

“I am very proud and appreciative that the most outstanding player each season, as voted by his peers, will receive the award with my name on it.”

-Ted Lindsay at the ceremony today announcing the renaming the Lester B. Pearson Award to the Ted Lindsay Award.  More from the NHLPA.

Below, watch an interview with Ted.

It is absolutely fitting that this trophy is named for Ted Lindsay.
He fought long and hard against Jack Adams and the owners for the benefit of his fellow players.
He sacrificed his career as one of the best players in the NHL for his comrades’ well-being.
Countless players, wives, and children have benefitted from his leadership in this battle.
Nothing could be more appropriate than every player and every fan be annually reminded of his contributions.

This is great news. Congrats to Ted.

Though, this is gonna tick off a lot of Canadians.

There’s a saying that “the face you have at age 25 is the face God gave you, but the face you have after 50 is the face you earned.” Well, Terrible Ted earned every scar and wrinkle on that great face of his. And he definitely earned the privilege of having his name on that trophy. Kudos to the NHLPA for doing the right thing.

Isn’t the Terrible Ted award a nice analog to the Lady Byng? Glad to see that even without leadership the NHLPA can recognize Ted Lindsay’s contributions to the players and the sport.  No disrespect intended to Lester Pearson, but putting Mr. Lindsay’s name on it gives it a lot more credibility and further defines what it stands for.
