Afternoon Line- Mathieu Perreault

"I'm not surprised to the honest...player safety my ass. This is literally an elbow to the face to a guy that didn't have the puck.

"I see him coming, I brace for a hit, it was a late hit, I never had the puck and he puts an elbow to my face and they're not going to do anything about it. Now I’ve got to take matters into my own hands. Next time this happens and I get to swing my stick across his forehead and I shouldn’t get suspended then."

- Mathieu Perreault of the Winnipeg Jets on no action from Player Safety on an elbow from Jake Vitranen.  TSN has more (video is geo-blocked) or watch the incident below.

added 3:06pm, video of Perreault speaking today is below too.

Really bad elbow, he’s got reason to be mad.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the NHL fines him for complaining about DOPS.

He’s not incorrect, but neither was Torts…

People told me that one of these days a ref was going to miss a blatant penalty but I didn’t believe it.

Someone - maybe a guy who’s made their money and is on a team going nowhere - - should call out Gary Bettman and Bill Daley by name. George Parros by name.
Whole sham of the DoPS. And why not link it to the NHL’s primitive denialism about concussions and their role in allowing headshots to go unpunished.

Be colorful. Be personal. Say: you’re the guys at the top, the buck stops with you, you’re responsible for this shamefully broken system. You can suspend me and fine me and try to make me the bad guy and ostracize me from your lucrative club. Go on every single major sports show. But also know your facts. Maybe it will be a big enough story media outside hockey and sports would find it interesting. Keep pushing the point: why is suspending me and finding me and trying to gag me and trying to make me the scapegoat for your own broken policies always your only response?

To protect the “reputation and integrity” of the league?
What reputation and integrity. Where is it? It’s shut up, don’t question us while we make money and maybe you’ll get your little cut.

Perrault is absolutely right to ask if he can use his stick to defend himself.
It’s not rhetorical when you have a history of concussions and are a smaller guy who literally did nothing to provoke or even expose himself to that kind of headshot.
And sooner or later that kind of thing might happen. Guys continue to try and injure opponents with elbows and shoulders to the head and reckless blindside charges. Won’t fight. Never apologize. Aren’t held accountable by the league. None of the league’s rationales are consistent or even make sense. They sure as hell are as ineffective as you can get. The only person who is punished is the guy who is cheap-shotted

And yeah since this always comes up, it’s fair to call out the NHLPA as well,
since they only seem to go to bat for the dangerous offenders and never for the guys having their careers risked by cheapshot artists. That’s wrong. The NHLPA isn’t merely a criminal defense bar. They represent all players’ including health and safety. What’s worse - a major head injury or a few too many games’ suspension and fine?

But the NHLPA doesn’t run the DoPS safety.
They don’t employ George Parros.

It starts and ends with the league and league embarrasses itself more each week and with each incident.
