Afternoon Line- Donald Fehr On The 2018 Winter Olympics

“I’ve been in this business too long to make predictions either on timing or anything else, I think at this point, we have to wait and see how it plays out. I think, however, if we end up not going, the reaction from the players’ side — across the board — is not going to be a good one. And my guess is it’s going to last for a very long time.”

-Donald Fehr, executive director of the NHLPA.  Michael Traikos of the National Post has more on this topic.

The top players are going to have to step up and tell their reps that the Olympics are very important to the sport and future agreements.

My feeling too jhp, if 15 of the top 25 players in the NHL say they are going, imagine the backlash Bettman would receive for any action he takes against them.

Even if no action is taken, many won’t be happy with the NHL, games being played without the stars from many teams.

The NHLPA could make this very rough on Bettman but they have to be unified.

I’d go so far as give the fans a break in seat prices, let the AHL affliate teams come up and play in the big circuit, let the players left behind mix in with the AHL affiliate team and play in those small markets for the two weeks.  Kids who don’t get to NHL rinks could get pictures, autos from stars they couldn’t get to.

Go to the Olympics.  Period.  It’s a no-brainer.
