Afternoon Line- Don Cherry

"I'd like to talk about Matthews for a minute," Cherry started. "The leading scorer last year, the leading scorer of the whole league last year, Rocket Richard. Now everything was going good he used to be dressed, I'd have to say him and Lundqvist were 1 and 2 in getting dressed, pretty sharp guys.

"Evidently it was pretty tough for him to get dressed, $10-million and he can't get dressed? So, you see him coming in now, he used to come in with [Mitch] Marner all the time, now he comes in alone, and you can't say he's a slob, it [looks] like he's going to a barbecue or something like that, and I just don't understand it."

Don Cherry on his latest podcast.  Steven Psihogios of Yahoo has more.

still pi$$ed about how HNIC treated this man..

after they canned hot stove, coach’s corner was the only thing that made watching the leafs bearable.

No one but absolute dinosaurs would care if the Leafs a) were winning and their stars were earning their salaries, or, at least b) their 10M+ players were incredibly hard working and doing all the little things on the ice to win in spite of the puck not going in.

I don’t know a lot about the Toronto market.
Just that most fans whose opinions I see seem to consider
their stars to be pretty uninvested, even unusually aloof, arrogant
personalities. A fair amount of bad blood after hometown kid Marner
“Negotiated in the media” and sort of held his team hostage as if they owed
him a premium for having won nothing and having grown up there.
Mathews’ stunt with the female security guard and the ultra-entitled family cover up
still kind of leaves a bad taste.

But mostly it’s that when you have three guys making well over 10M and they can’t win a single playoff round, act like they are pop stars, and don’t do much on the ice when they aren’t scoring - which is more and more when it counts - they aren’t just underperforming their own contracts; they are handcuffing another good player or two’s worth of cap decisions. A lot of that falls on Dubas. But I keep seeing from fans who have loved the Leafs their whole lives is “I don’t like this team”. Not the Leafs - maybe that’s a love-hate source of frustration, but it’s still their team. They don’t fit the most part like the players on their own team.

If you make big money, produce, and your team is winning - no one gives a crap.  Look at Cam Newton when the Panthers were super bowl contenders.

But when you don’t produce and your team loses - well, people will pick at anything.  Again, look at Cam Newton, this time with the Patriots.
