Afternoon Line- Craig Custance On Nicklas Lidstrom

He was the best player on the ice all the time, every game. Not just for one moment. Look at a photo of his teammates making memorable plays and there's usually No. 5 in the celebration, and chances are he did something to set up that moment for the ages.

Maybe someone else here will know this, because I’ve been curious about it before:

Who of the Wings first started firing shots from the point DELIBERATELY WIDE OF THE NET to take the bounce off the crazy Joe boards back to someone in front of or beside the net?  It led to a lot of goals there for a while….

It was genius, because tracking it required the goalie to move and follow so much that he was almost guaranteed to be out of position/not be able to react when the puck ended up back in front to a waiting Wing.

Custance’s article talks about Lidstrom’s knock for getting shots through…. it would not surprise me if that was Lidstrom’s idea.

Also, the thing about Lidstrom knocking down dump-in attempts…. that is single biggest thing IMHO that the Wings miss.  Nick would just casually knock all sorts of stuff down out of the air.  He would hold the puck in the offensive zone(I’ve talked a lot about how the Wings miss both Lidstrom and Rafalski’s ability to do this to kepe plays and pressure alive).  He would prevent dumps into the defensive zone.  He would knock down cross -ice passes.  There was no 3 dimensional space where a puck was safe for him,
