8 Fun Facts about the Vegas Golden Knights Hockey Team

01/01/2021 at 10:03am EST

The Vegas Golden Knights might only have been in the game for three seasons, but they have already managed to become one of the most popular and well-performing ice hockey teams in the United States. In just a few seasons, they have established themselves as one of the best expansion teams.

Let us take a look at eight fun facts about the Vegas Golden Knights ice hockey team.

Three Seasons

The Vegas Golden Knights were formed in 2017. They are currently owned by Black Knights Sports & Entertainment. They have only played in three seasons since their creation, and they are based out of the T-Mobile Arena as their home arena in Paradise, Nevada.

Stanley Cup In First Year

The Vegas Golden Knights team has found great success since its inception three years ago. They managed to reach the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2017-2018 year, their first season as an NHL team. They lost to the Washington Capitals by a 1-4 margin.

Retired Jersey No. 58

Even though they have been in operation for only three years, the Vegas Golden Knights have already retired No. 58 from their official jerseys. The decision came in the wake of the deadly 2017 Vegas shooting, which left 58 dead and 867 injured. It was a tribute to the unfortunate victims of the most deadly shooting in recent history.

Beating The Odds

Even though the odds of the Vegas Golden Knights winning the Stanley Cup in their first season were 500-1, they still managed to reach the finals in what would be the first time since St. Louis Blues did it in 1968. That is an impressive record.

Black Knights

The name Golden Knights was chosen for the team by Bill Foley, one of the owners, to honor the Black Knights in the United States Military Academy. Black Knights are the military athletic teams that are also called Army West Point.

Unlikely Mascot

The team mascot for the Golden Knights is not a knight but a cartoon lizard called Chance. Chance is a Gila monster, which is a species of lizards in the southwestern region of the United States. The team officials felt that a traditional knight would not be as child-friendly as this mascot. Chance was officially revealed in October 2017 on the occasion of the second game of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Two Logos

The team has two logos. One is the barbute helmet typical of traditional knights, which serves as the team’s primary logo. The secondary logo for the team is that of a star in front of two crossed swords. It represents the star in the iconic ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South.

The Fun Committee

The Vegas Knights understand that sports and road trips can get boring. There is a designated Fun Committee for keeping things light and keeping up the spirits of the players.
