Conclusions From Consol

Coming to you live from the Consol Arena for the very last time, as the tables are being folded up and everyone is saying their goodbyes, it’s a good time to look back at this year’s draft. It was a draft only a few trades, only 7 through the 6 rounds of day 2 but it still contained it’s excitement. Once the initial question of Yakupov or Murray was answered the next questions had to be who could improve their team the most through draft selection or trades. But with the draft most players are long term projects, and the question of improvement through the draft is never fully answered.

There were a total of 211 players were drafted this weekend in Pittsburgh, all coming from 12 different countries. 99 hail from Canada, 56 the USA, 22 from Sweden, 11 from Russia, 9 from Finland, 6 the Czech Republic, 2 each from Denmark and Latvia and 1 a piece from Belarus, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Sadly the Australian Nathan Walker who popped up on many scouts’ lists did not make the cut this year, meaning that there has still never been an Australian born player drafted into the NHL.

Wild Follow Suit With Defencemen Selection

It was the year of the defencemen in the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Eight of the top 10 drafted players were defencemen and 5 of those came through the WHL, meaning that there are a few more small town boys about to hit big cities. One of those players was Mathew Dumba, whose season was especially difficult given his team’s rash of injuries and suspensions. Things got more difficult when Dumba didn’t make the cut when it came to Team Canada’s World Junior Team, but that only seemed to inspire him to push harder for the draft. It also may have led to his being named captain of the U18 Team Canada at the World Championships.

Islanders Add Grit and Physicality in Reinhart

In the first round, with their fourth pick the New York Islanders have selected Griffin Reinhart from the Edmonton Oil Kings, a player that was project to go pretty much anywhere in the first round of this year’s draft.

Reinhart didn’t get off to the hottest start this past season, and it wasn’t until teammates left for the World Juniors camps that Reinhart seemed to find his edge and real drive, but you knew all season long that he was a player to watch. And now it seems that it was the New York Islanders that were successful in “fall apart for Reinhart.”

Top Prospects Speak

After long and numerous bumpy flights here we are in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, the birthplace of Heinz Tomato Ketchup. That’s right, Ketchup, the staple food of toddlers and teenagers everywhere! The limelight has been cast off of the popular condiment for just a few days as the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and I make Pittsburgh home. Thursday afternoon, I was on a boat. Not just any boat, but one filled with the members of the media who didn’t miss the boat and the most popular teenage boys in all of Pittsburgh, the NHL top prospects.

But the heat was stifling and the hot metal surface on which we stood seemed to adhere itself to the bottom of your shoes at the molecular level. Looking around at the players, it was easy to see that they were just as uncomfortable because of the weather, especially the Alberta boys who are so used to the dry air in the raised elevation. Although the weather played a part in the look of discomfort, it was clear that the questions are taking their toll as well. For players like Nail Yakupov, you can tell that he looks forward to quieter days, but you know that he will always be the centre of attention for anyone with a microphone; your popularity doesn’t go away as soon as you’re drafted and may only intensify.

2012 Draft Coverage

For the third consecutive year, the Edmonton Oilers have the first overall pick. And for that reason I will be making the trip to Pittsburgh to cover the event. During the draft weekend and the days leading up to it, I will be collecting photos, quotes and as many interviews from as many team’s selections as I can.

Because you come to Kukla’s Korner for the latest and broadest range of NHL and hockey news I will strive to bring it to you as a part of Paul’s team. Please keep in mind that mine is a one woman show, but feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. And be sure to check back here Thursday through Saturday for draft updates and of course the days following the draft as well.

The draft has been building up to be bigger and more eventful than free agency day itself and now we are only days away from the grand event in Pittsburgh’s new arena. Who will go first overall? Which team will make the biggest splash? Will Brian Burke make a big trade deal? We can always guess, but soon we will know. Stay tuned!

A very strange way of informing the hockey world that Pittsburgh’s hosting the 2012 Entry Draft

We all know the drill by now. The NHL doesn’t award franchises or cities marquee events like the NHL Entry Draft or the All-Star Game based upon any sense of balance. Instead, the NHL’s criteria for awarding said events involves the following: 1. Build a new rink, and we will come; 2. Stabilize your ownership situation and/or stave off franchise insolvency, and we’ll give you a wink; 3. Stand by the commissioner during a difficult business situation and you’ll receive some reciprocal back-scratching. The Pittsburgh Penguins apparently fit at least two of those three categories, and as such, they’re likely to host the 2012 Entry Draft at the Consol Energy Center…but the Hockey News’s Ryan Kennedy reports that the reasoning for said assumption involves something…well, furry…

The bumping up of a major niche convention in Pittsburgh lends credence to widespread rumors the city will host the 2012 NHL Draft.

The Penguins are known to be interested in hosting the draft, which would be held at the recently opened Consol Energy Center, but team has also stated it plans to hold a number of other events in the preceeding week if given the opportunity. Because of the expansive nature of the planned festivities, the city required the use of its convention center, which had already been booked for the June 21 to 24 by Anthrocon, an annual gathering of Furries.
