It’s that time of week again… well, actually a day late, as yesterday’s news was to juicy to pass up, and there was more news this week than I expected. Anyway, it’s news round-up time. As I bring you news tidbits from around the CHL and NCAA Hockey from the last week. Honestly, I don’t even really enjoy doing these because there isn’t a lot of “writing” involved on my part… but alas… I have yet to have any better ideas… and I’ll be quite happy once the season gets rolling.
So here we go…

NHL 12 Update: Gretzky Talks Legends

In an exclusive interview with Game Hunters, USA Today’s branch of video game coverage, The Great One sat down to talk with them briefly about NHL 12, as well as hockey past, present, and future.
Normally, I’d just link to the interview, but it is Sunday, and I’m looking for something to break the dull of boredom that is putting together those “Around the Leagues” updates together. So I’ll bring you the full thing, with some of my own side comments when appropriate.

Via a new producer blog released by EA late yesterday, we have some more details now how the new “Legends” will be incorporated into NHL 12. Also, before that, I missed some news about the game demo, which was released on Thursday via another exclusive with Operation Sports. There has also been a new quick-clip released on the multiple EASHL player builds.
Read on, as I’ll get into all of this and begin breaking it down for further analysis.

NHL 12 Overnight Update: The First Three Official Legends
by Doug Miller on 08/12/11 at 06:55 AM ET
Comments (13)
In what was fairly foreseeable, EA Sports in partnership with GameTrailers TV revealed yet another short teaser about the “Legends” coming to NHL 12. Saved for the very last segment of GTTV’s half-hour block on Spike TV. This confirmed a few highly suspected things, and also killed other possible rumors… but did give us some solid new info for sure.

Yesterday, via an exclusive with gametrailers.com EA Sports released a teaser trailer for the “Legends” to be featured in NHL 12. All but pretty much confirming that this is indeed the “big announcement” they have been talking about since day one. As we are just about a mere month away from the game’s release in Europe on September 9, and North America on September 13.

Alright, well this is a pretty massive update, so let’s get right into the thick of things. Starting with the minor stuff, the new EA Producer Blog on Presentation, posted up Wednesday by EA’s Presentation Producer for NHL 12, Ben Ross.
All of the following quoted excerpts in the following section are from that EA Presentation Blog, unless otherwise noted.

A Look Back at “The Game” That Created “Hockeytown”
by Doug Miller on 08/02/11 at 02:53 PM ET

Alright, I’m sure I’ll take some heat for this, for multiple reasons, but mostly because it goes outside my blog’s rage of coverage which is listed as “everything but the NHL”. In my defense though, this isn’t news; it’s just a retrospective look at some hockey history. Plus, ever since the recent retirement of Chris Osgood, I’ve been thinking about writing about this, and providing my personal perspective on what I feel is one of the most historic games in Detroit Red Wings franchise history, at least among the games that have been played in my lifetime (1987 to present).
As a young kid growing up in Metro-Detroit, I started casually watching hockey in 1991 - mostly the Red Wings; although I soon developed a love for the Boston Bruins as well, for some unknown reason. Once I watched my first hockey game, I instantly became a fan of the sport, as I found it to be far more entertaining and exciting than football, baseball, and basketball. I quickly learned how to skate and then starting playing hockey, but I still wouldn’t consider my young self much more than a moderate fan of hockey… until May 16, 1996… when St. Louis played Detroit in Game 7 of the Western Conference Semi-Finals.
