Stickey Situation For Bettman

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

If the Penguins move after their Mellon Arena lease expires at the end of June, it will reinforce the widely held notion in much of the United States that the NHL is a rinky-dink operation. Imagine what the perception will be if the team folds up its tent days after winning a Stanley Cup.
But here’s the problem for Bettman: What happens if he cannot broker a deal between the two sides and ultimately decides Mario & Co. need to stay put? Does the NHL suddenly find itself in a tug-of-war with one of its greatest players and a Hockey Hall of Famer?

Penguins Officials Head To Vegas

from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The Penguins will travel to Las Vegas today to explore a possible move, as state and local leaders try to arrange a meeting with the team to get talks here back on track….
Team officials also are hoping to set up a meeting this week, possibly in Los Angeles, with representatives of Anschutz Entertainment Group, manager of the $276 million Sprint Center being built in Kansas City. Penguins Update

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

A meeting will be held later this week in Pittsburgh involving all the interested parties, including NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, whose presence would appear to be two fold….
It appears the two sides have the basis for a deal in place, but there are concerns with the possibility of cost overruns on a new arena and who would be responsible for them.
That’s apparently the sticking point right now.
The smart money suggests that with Bettman prodding both sides, they will come to a workable compromise.

Realistically this species, known as the Pittsburgh Penguin (makeupyourmindus pleasus), is as ‘endangered’ as a hijacker who holds an unloaded pistol to his own head.

Penguins Will Explore Relocation

from KDKA,

“Facing mounting uncertainty” in their quest for a new arena, Penguins officials say they’ve reached an impasse in negotiations and “will aggressively explore relocation.”
In a letter addressed to Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Penguins owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle blasted officials for their failure to reach a deal in a timely fashion.
