Hab It Your Way

from the Globe and Mail,

“I know a lot of people have us down and out and not making the playoffs, but it comes from within, from chemistry, and hopefully the young guys will find that early and ride it the rest of the year,” Higgins said Thursday as the Canadiens reported for training camp at the Bell Centre.

“Youthful energy is going to be a big part of the team.”

Higgins even found a theme for the Canadiens season — hunger.

“The main word for this year is hunger,” he said. “Guys have to want it.

More Heart Surgery For Numminen

from WGRZ,

The Buffalo Sabres have announced that defenseman Teppo Numminen will have heart surgery.

Numminen learned of new complications Monday when undergoing a routine examination at the Cleveland Clinic prior to the start of training camp. The Sabres say it’s too early to tell if the surgery is career or season threatening.

General Manager Darcy Regier told reporters he’s still learning details of the situation, but did say the surgery Numminen needs is more extensive than two previous procedures he’s undergone to deal with an irregular heartbeat.

The Next Outdoor Game

From Eric Duhatchek at the Globe & Mail,

This time around, the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Buffalo Sabres and that too represents an intriguing match-up - although with a 1 p.m. Eastern starting time, it is hard to imagine them fitting in what could be a great legends game beforehand, what with Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey available on the Penguins’ side and a reunited French Connection leading the way for Buffalo. Nor can anyone underestimate the value of getting Sidney Crosby involved in the project, along with the rest of his exciting, emerging Penguins’ team. Even if the event doesn’t strike a chord, the presence of Sid The Kid will

Line Of The Day

from Tapeleg at Jerseys and Hockey Love,

Why is it that every time you see a new jersey in the RBK EDGE style, it looks like it is apologizing? It’s like it wants to say, “Hey, sorry about this, but it isn’t my fault. I’m just designed this way.”

Bruins Comfortable With Tweaks

from the Patriot Ledger,

‘‘It’s only one year we’ve been together,’’ said veteran winger Glen Murray, Boston’s oldest player (35 on Nov. 1) and, like Bergeron, an assistant to second-year captain Zdeno Chara. ‘‘You can’t blow it up right away. Let’s try it again, get this team together - add a couple things here and there, and see what we can do.’’

That’s about what Chiarelli did. The GM traded prospect Petr Kalus to Minnesota for Manny Fernandez to fortify Boston in goal, shipped underperforming winger Shean Donovan to Ottawa for under-heralded winger Peter Schaefer, and added toughness by signing free agent forward Shawn Thornton away from the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.

‘‘I like the moves Peter made,’’ said center Marc Savard, No. 1 on Boston’s chart last season in assists (74, third in the NHL) and points (96, tied for eighth). ‘‘They were subtle, but we have ‘name’ players here already. He picked up a good goalie and a couple good forwards, and I’m excited about that.’’

Gerber Plans To Battle For Starting Goalie Spot

from the Ottawa Sun,

Goalie Martin Gerber has worn a black mask void of any Senators logos when he’s skated with teammates at the Bell Sensplex.

Anything significant there?...

So, as some have suggested, is the blank mask a silent statement of Gerber’s desire for a trade, like the plain white one Martin Biron wore in Buffalo last year (he was finally moved at the trade deadline)?

“That’s B.S.,” said Gerber, who has been getting ready for Ottawa’s training camp, which begins today….

“My personal goal is to get back in net, get as much ice time as possible, as quick as possible. I’m here and ready to go. At the end of the season I said (to Murray), ‘I need to play.’ I want to play. It doesn’t matter where it is at this point. I have to be playing to get my career going again.’ Those were the words we had.”
