Panthers Frustrated

from the Miami Herald,

“It’s so frustrating because we worked so hard to make the playoffs,” said goalie Ed Belfour, who was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after showing up the officials by demonstrating a dive move to the lead referee.
“It’s frustrating to see the way the refs can control the outcome of a game like that. Down on the other end, two of our guys get blatantly tripped and they’re both watching, but they don’t call it. . . . But on the opposite side, their guy takes a dive and the hand goes up right away.
“I don’t know what this game is coming to, but it’s embarrassing. We’re trying to sell the game here in Florida and fans are frustrated. They don’t want to see that. They want to see us win and they want to see a fair game. It’s heartbreaking.”

Panthers Have A Promotion - But Not Promoted

from On Frozen Pond,

The first 5,000 kids who attended Friday’s game against the Capitals received a nice Stanley C. Panther bobblehead.
Cool, no?
Too bad no one knew about it.
Members of their PR staff say they didn’t hear about the promotion until Friday morning, way too late to get word out on the street….
Instead of having thousands of kids (and, yes, their eBay-lovin’ parents) storming the gates trying to get their paws (ha!) on one of these bobbles, the most famous arena in west Plantation was pretty empty once again.

Panthers Making A Late Push

from Wes Goldstein at CBS Sportsline,

Given up for dead as the All-Star Game approached, Florida has dramatically turned things around over the past six weeks, going 12-5-3 to climb back into the Eastern Conference playoff race. After a near-sellout crowd saw them beat Southeast Division co-leader and rival Atlanta on Saturday for the first time in seven tries, the Panthers find themselves just five points shy of the eighth and final postseason seed with 13 games remaining.
“I’m sure a lot of people have written us off, but in here, we’ve never thought we’re out of it,” said forward Nathan Horton. “Obviously, it took us longer than we wanted to get things going, but we feel good about things and now we’re making our push.”

Fighting Style May Change

from the Sun-Sentinel,

The Panthers had their first opportunity to test the NHL’s new Reebok uniforms during Friday’s practice. They drew mixed reviews….
Some players, like forward Ville Peltonen, did not notice a difference. Others complained that the jerseys limited their range of motion.
But defenseman Steve Montador pointed out a lesser-known feature of the new uniforms.
“I think initially there could be some different types of fights because there is less to grab on to,” said Montador, who has been in eight fights this season. “It could cause a little bit of a learning curve to grab onto and prevent a knockout punch from coming your way.”

Where Has The Time Gone

from the Miami Herald,

Jacques Martin will coach his 1,000th regular-season game in the NHL tonight, a milestone tinged with elation and reverence as he remembers his mentor, close friend, former colleague and idol, the late Roger Neilson.
Martin will become the 12th coach in league history to accomplish the feat and tie Neilson, who was the Panthers’ first head coach.
‘‘I feel honored to still work in this league,’’ Martin said of the milestone. `I’m wondering where the time has gone.’‘
