Jaroslav Hlinka- Rookie At Age 30

from the Denver Post,

Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville said Hlinka “has had a great camp. ... His poise and patience with the puck, his play selection, are all high end. Being around top players who have a lot of skill, he plays right into that, feeds off of that.”

Was Quenneville skeptical about taking a look at a 30-year-old rookie?

“Well, it’s opportunity,” Quenneville said. “He’s playing at the top level over there, and he’s the top scorer over there, and it can be a matter of giving some guys a break, or having them get discovered. Or some guys just mature a little bit later. ... He’s given us every indication that he can handle this, no problem, and I think he can help our hockey club.”

Fighting Smyth

from the Denver Post,

Choosing to fight Smyth, who is playing on the top line with Joe Sakic and Andrew Brunette, appeared inexcusable, like a Broncos defensive lineman trying to beat up quarterback Jay Cutler. It also appeared that Laperriere’s fight with Love was meant to send a message that you don’t mess with high-salary, skilled forwards like Smyth.

Afterward, the players presented a different picture. Turns out that Smyth, who signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract in July, picked the fight with Love, and Laperriere only fought Love to remind Smyth that he will be handling his dirty work.

Theodore Wants His Status Back

from the Rocky Mountain News,

But the Avalanche’s 31-year- old goalie first needs to recover from the arthroscopic knee surgery he underwent Aug. 29 after a magnetic resonance imaging test revealed a problem.

Theodore called the surgery “a minor thing” and said there’s no specific timetable for when he can play in a preseason game. He’s concentrating on rehabilitation while maintaining his conditioning.

“I’m making good progress,” he said. “I’m anxious to put the equipment on.”

After watching Peter Budaj start 39 of the final 46 games last season, Theodore also is eager to prove he’s capable of being an elite goalie again.

“I’m looking forward to regaining the status I had,” he said.

Smyth & Sakic Have Fun Together

from Pierre Lebrun of the CP via Yahoo,

“A dream come true - playing with a future Hall of Famer and also Andrew Brunette,” Smyth told The Canadian Press from Denver. “They threw us right together from the get-go.”

“I played with him a bit on Team Canada so I know him a little bit,” Sakic said Friday. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. Right off the bat they’re trying to set the lines and get that chemistry going to get off to a good start.”

Smyth Would Like To Be An Oiler Killer

from the Rocky Mountain News,

Now that he’s a member of the Avalanche, having signed a five-year, $31.25 million contract on July 1, Smyth can set his sights on other targets.

“Well, hopefully I can be an Oiler killer,” Smyth said Thursday after undergoing medical and physical tests at the Pepsi Center, the first official day of training camp. “Some teams you play well against, some teams you don’t. I don’t know about impressions. You go out and play and perform and you try to do it every night, but it just so happened to work out against these guys.”

Line Of The Day

from Tapeleg at Jerseys and Hockey Love,

Why is it that every time you see a new jersey in the RBK EDGE style, it looks like it is apologizing? It’s like it wants to say, “Hey, sorry about this, but it isn’t my fault. I’m just designed this way.”

Northwest Division Wide Open

from Wes Goldstein at CBS Sportsline,

One man’s competitiveness might be another’s mediocrity, but it makes things intriguing in the Northwest Division, where most teams start the season with as good a chance of finishing first as missing the playoffs entirely.

Not much actually separates the top from the bottom in this cutthroat division, where the best two teams last season were playoff outsiders the year before and the last-place club was a Stanley Cup Finalist only months before. Things can and do change quickly in the Northwest, even in the middle of the season as the Colorado Avalanche proved last year when they were given up for dead around the All-Star break.

A Look At Jose Theodore

from Habs World,

...Undoubtedly the Avalanche would love to trade him, but there aren’t many teams interested in paying $6 million dollars this year for a guy, who statistically may be the worst goaltender in the NHL. The Avalanche has thought of buying him out, but for now have decided to hang onto Theodore to avoid a major cap hit.
Needless to say, when his contract is up at the end of this year, it is safe to say that Theodore will not be able to retain his position as the league’s second highest paid goaltender. To say that he will be staring at a substantial pay cut is an understatement. Whether some team is willing to take the gamble on Theodore remains to be seen.
Any team that signs Theodore from here on in is hoping to strike lightning in a bottle again. And while all signs point to Theodore being unable to regain his MVP winning form, it is wise to remember that even Samson regained his former power, but only when his hair eventually grew back.

Avs Re-Energized

from the Rocky Mountain News,

“I think everybody is excited,” general manager Francois Giguere said Thursday. “The players I’ve talked to are energized. I think everybody wants to prove that this team is closer to being the team that we saw in the last 20 or so games last year.”
Giguere indicated he didn’t anticipate any more signings. That would seem to rule out the possibility of bringing back a free agent like Peter Forsberg, who underwent hernia surgery this week and hasn’t said whether he will play in the NHL in 2007-08.
“That doesn’t mean you don’t revisit things moving forward,” Giguere said. “But right now we like the roster and the competition with some of the new guys. We want to give them a chance to have a realistic shot to compete for some jobs.”
One of the more intriguing story lines will involve the competition between goalies Peter Budaj and Jose Theodore.
