Tanguay Has Had Enough

from the Montreal Gazette,

Tanguay’s lucrative deal, some Edmonton and national media suggested, led to inflation and priced Smyth out of the Oilers’ comfort zone.
That insinuation is more than Tanguay can stand.
“Ryan’s a great player,” Tanguay said. “Don’t get me wrong. I’d like to have him on my team. But what happened with the contract situation, I think it’s just unfortunate that I got dragged into it for no reason. I don’t see why the fans in Edmonton or anybody else in Canada would be mad at me because they couldn’t get Ryan Smyth signed. I don’t think it’s got anything to do with me.”

Iggy Means More

from Geroge Johnson at ESPN,

Both of Sutter’s star men, Jarome Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff, are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents as of July 1, 2008.
Iginla is paid handsomely at $7 million this season, but he probably will be seeking Jaromir Jagr-type money ($8 million range) in his next deal. He’ll be 31. His agent, Don Meehan, just happens to be Smyth’s agent, too. Meehan fully understands what his client is worth in goals, leadership and good-guy profile.
Iginla, believe it or not, means more to the Flames than Smyth does, uh, did, to the Oilers. By the time Meehan and Sutter get down to hammering out a new deal for the Calgary captain, Iginla will be threatening all Theo Fleury’s career Oilers offensive records. His is unquestionably the face of the franchise. He wears the “C.”

A Common Goal

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

How well can they do in the postseason? The West in loaded, but all Calgary’s pieces seem to be there.
“Yeah, we’ve got a shot at doing something special,” Iginla said. “I think every guy believes that. That makes it easier to buy in, if some guy isn’t playing as much as he likes, or is playing a different role than he’s used to—when we’re all thinking we have a shot at doing something good, something special, not just good.’‘
Whether the Flames are good enough to compete with the other Western powers come playoff time, of course, remains the burning question in Cowtown.
