Goal Line Report

May be they’re right

I’ve been checking out some New York Ranger blogs these last two days and there was one common theme used to describe this team: mediocre.

I first came across that word in the comments section in one of the blogs I posted on Friday. Here is part of the comment:

At some point reporters covering this team, bloggers, fans and the coach and GM of this team will wake up and acknowledge what objective observers already know, i.e., that the Rangers are a MEDIOCRE TO LOUSY TEAM.

On Scotty Hockey, his blog said the following:

When talking about the Rangers tonight with my friend Andrea, I was quite disgusted and bluntly said that “we suck.”

She replied that no, “even worse, we’re mediocre.”

And that is completely true, and completely saddening. The Rangers aren’t a good team but they aren’t a bad team. There is the talent there to win a string of games and revive your faith, but there is also little heart and dedication to keep that string going. It has been the same for years where the team overspends just enough to ensure they can’t rebuild with top draft picks and overspends on just the wrong players so there is no chemistry and the house of cards falls apart far before the Finals. So very sad, so very Rangers.

Are these folks right? If you were to base it on this past week’s games, they definitely are. This was a team that started out as one of the league’s best when it went 7-1 in its first eight games. This is a team that has a tremendous goalie, a star goal scorer and solid enough defense to win some hockey games and compete every night. Yet, in the team’s 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues last night, they lacked all of those things.

So what gives? This team is 22-19-7 and yet, that record could either be a lot better or a lot worse, which is unacceptable considering how much these guys are getting paid.

Tonight, the Blueshirts take on the Montreal Canadiens, who are 2-1-1 in their last four. The game also marks the return of former Blueshirts Scott Gomez and Paul Mara. Not sure what kind of reception Gomez will get but Paul Mara deserves a nice one.

Here’s to mediocrity!
