A Sad Realization

Good afternoon, folks. Sorry I have not written anything in awhile but as you can clearly tell, there just is not much to write about these days.

Over the past month or so, I have come to a sad realization: I can survive without the sport of hockey. I am sure many other hockey fans out there have to come to this same realization but let me tell you why it is so sad.

I have been a hockey fan since I was born (1983). As I got out of diapers and learned to walk and understand what was going on around me, I became an absolute hockey nut.

I watched as many games as I possibly can, I went to many, many New York Rangers' games since my dad was a season ticket holder, I joined a Rotiserie hockey league, I bought hockey highlight tapes and much, much, more. When it came to being a hockey fan, I was an absolute fanatic about the sport.

However, this lockout has really tested my fandom and right now, it is tough to describe how I feel about the sport. Since the 1994-95 season, the league has been locked out three times. That is three times where there was no NHL for a prolonged period of time.

The first two times I was able to survive, particularly the second one. It was during the second one that I spent a semester abroad in Galway, Ireland so it is not like I missed much.

This one, however, has clearly had an impact on me. While I am still doing some writing at Sportsnet.ca, I have been uninspired when it comes to writing about hockey. Stories are harder to come by and while I could just as easily focuses my efforts on the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League, I just do not have the will to do so.

I have found ways to survive this lockout. I was always into Major League Baseball so I watched/have been following a lot of that.

I have also become a huge football fan. I am following more NFL writers/bloggers on Twitter, listening to more and more NFL podcasts and staying glued to channels such as the NFL Network and NFL Redzone.

Do I still love hockey? Yes, and I more than likely always will.

With that said, I have come to the realization that there is more to the sports world than hockey/NHL and with the lockout going on, the sport I have loved for so long and forced me to shift my attentions elsewhere.

Never did I think those words would come out of my mouth.

No matter how hard I try, I just can’t really get I tooted sports much at all, especially anywhere near the level that I love hockey.

Patrick, I share your feelings. I have rediscovered my lifelong love for the Tigers who had taken a back seat to the Red Wings in my life for many years. I’m no fan of the NFL or NBA, but find I now have more time to follow college hockey and women’s soccer, two other sports that I love.

And like you, I find that the AHL does not fill the void in any way. I thought I would enjoy watching the Grand Rapids Griffins on Fox Sports Detroit a few days ago, but seeing the Red Wings announcers calling the game was just depressing and I turned it off.

As much as I love the Red Wings, I really don’t know if I’ll be back when the NHL decides to resume play. This pattern of a lock out every time the CBA is set to expire is despicable. And it is really killing my enthusiasm for pro hockey.

I watched the friday night game of the griffins also, but I don’t think it was depression that made me not watch after the 2nd period. It was boredom. I too have been watching more baseball and football and it’s replacing my need for hockey. I’ll definately start watching the wings again when the circus ends, but I’m really not missing it. Maybe when football season ends I will. I dunno.
