Henrique’s Double-Overtime Goal Sends Devils To Second Round Date With Flyers

The momentum in the Devils/Panthers series ping-ponged back and forth seemingly every game. However, in the decisive final game, the Devils were the one skating victorious. Adam Henrique’s double-overtime goal gave the Devils a 3-2 win and 4-3 series victory.

“I think I blacked out when I heard the thud at the back of the net,” Henrique said to Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger. “An NHL Game 7 winner. That’s the game you always play with mini-sticks at home in the hallway or living room.”

In the win, Martin Brodeur turned aside 43 shots, helping the Devils advance to the next round.

“Winning a playoff series goes a long way,” said Brodeur to Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record. “I think for people it’s just a confidence and sometimes you need adversity. …The first round, I think when you haven’t been in the playoffs, especially the year before and it’s been struggling getting out of the first round, when you get through that it feels good for a day and then after that we’ve got to face the Flyers.”

Head Coach Pete DeBoer had nothing but good things to say about his veteran goaltender.

“He was outstanding, especially in the first overtime and late in the third period,” DeBoer said. “He was our best player tonight and he had to be or we don’t win.”

“A fitting end to the series,” DeBoer said. “I’m, obviously, glad we won, but both teams battled for five periods tonight and really seven and a half games. Glad to come out on the right side of it, but also full marks to Florida for the fight they put up and how they played in the series.”

The Devils are aware that they only have a bigger mountain to climb if they want to take down the Flyers in the second round.

“We know we have a tough opponent ahead with Philly,” Zach Parise said.

“It’s zero-zero again,” Henrique said.

The Flyers beat the Devils in the regular season series, going 3-2-1. The Devils struggled to beat Ilya Bryzgalov in the regular season, who posted two shutouts and a 0.29 goals-against average against the Devils.
