Hockey Observations In Mid-May

05/14/2023 at 10:10am EDT

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- There is almost universal celebration around the NHL when the Maple Leafs get eliminated from the playoffs. like the rich guy took one on the chin. But at the same time, there is significant regard for Dubas as a GM. It didn’t necessarily start out that way when he took over from Lou Lamoriello. But his reputation has grown greatly over time.

- Right now, if given a choice of the roster and payrolls of Top 6 players on Jersey, Buffalo, Ottawa or the Leafs, which team are you taking?

- The trade Kenny Holland made for Mattias Eklholm did two important things for the Edmonton Oilers. It put a solid big-time defenceman on their back end and promoted young Evan Bouchard for power play time — with Tyson Barrie dealt to Nashville. Bouchard has a giant shot from the point and leads all playoff defencemen in scoring, just one point behind Draisaitl and two behind Connor McDavid.

- This is all you need to know about the team’s team that is the Carolina Hurricanes: Their best player in the playoffs has been defenceman Jaccob Slavin. And adding puck-moving defencemen Brent Burns and Shayne Gostisbehere was great work by GM Don Waddell.

NHL Short Notes

05/14/2023 at 12:09am EDT

* The Kraken improved to 2-0 in potential elimination games this postseason and forced a Game 7 against the Stars thanks in part to goals from rookies Matty Beniers and Tye Kartye.

* Joe Pavelski continued to roll by scoring his eighth goal of the 2023 Second Round, establishing a franchise record for the most in a single series.

* The Golden Knights will visit Rogers Place for Game 6 of their series against the Oilers with a chance to advance to the Western Conference Final.

Current Hockey Observations

05/13/2023 at 7:52pm EDT

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

- It does seem somewhat far-fetched, does it not, this scenario we tweeted midweek under which, A) Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas would leave the Maple Leafs on an expiring contract to take over the Penguins; B) He would bring coach Sheldon Keefe with him; C) That, in turn, would leave Mike Sullivan without a job; D) Which would allow the two-time Stanley Cup winner with ties to Chris Drury to take over behind the bench for the Rangers?

I would acknowledge that would appear to be in the Buster Douglas-Mike Tyson realm of possibility, but at the same time I should tell you that I received an unsolicited text from a player late Thursday who said the rumor “was getting pretty loud.”...

- ... Pietrangelo’s blatantly obvious attempt to injure the playoffs’ leading goal scorer should have resulted in the same four-game suspension that was levied against Adam Graves in 1992 when he chopped Mario Lemieux across the gloves.

We are repeatedly told that injuries do not influence punishment, so it should have made no difference that No. 66 sustained a broken bone in his hand and that Draisaitl escaped harm.

Instead, this was simply another example of the Department of Player Safety failing to protect players. Who needs stars, anyway?

- Seems to me that GM Tom Fitzgerald’s offseason mandate in New Jersey is crystal as the Devils attempt to make the jump from contender to champion, and that is to acquire a franchise goaltender.

And there is likely going to be one available in Winnipeg, with perennial Vezina contender Connor Hellebuyck one year away from free agency and unlikely to sign an extension after seven seasons with the Jets.

Should Peter Laviolette Be Considered A Coaching Candidate For The New York Rangers?

05/13/2023 at 12:10pm EDT

from Ethan Sears of the New York Post,

For whatever reason, there is an undercurrent of resignation to Peter Laviolette’s inclusion in the discussion of who will be the Rangers’ next coach, as if he is there by dint of his availability on the job market instead of due to his accomplishments over two decades as an NHL coach.

Maybe that is to be expected after the Capitals mutually parted ways with Laviolette following a 35-37-10 record this past season, which put an end to a playoff streak that had begun in 2015 and marked just the second time since 2007 that the tournament was conducted without Washington.

The body of work for Laviolette, though, includes a Stanley Cup championship with the 2006 Hurricanes and appearances in the Cup final with the 2010 Flyers and 2017 Predators....

“I don’t know why he wouldn’t be a strong candidate,” Mike Milbury, the general manager who first hired Laviolette on Long Island, told The Post by phone Friday. “I know sometimes people want to shake it up with a radical approach and hire younger guys, college guys, but if you want an experienced guy who knows how to handle the bench and knows how to handle the locker room — key elements of being a successful coach — I think he’d be a strong candidate for any openings that are existing in the league today.”

The Only Game In Town On Sunday Starts At 10pm ET

05/13/2023 at 12:04pm EDT

NEW YORK (May 13, 2023) – The National Hockey League today announced that the start time for Game 6 of the Second Round series between the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers is set for 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 14, in Edmonton. The game will be televised on Sportsnet, CBC and TVA Sports in Canada. In the U.S., the game will be on ESPN.

The Edmonton Oilers Were Not At Their Best

05/13/2023 at 5:48am EDT

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,

Play better. Play smarter.

It’s as simple as that.

On a night where the Oilers didn’t score a five-on-five goal, where Leon Draisaitl’s line got very little done, where Stuart Skinner was pulled — again, where the Oilers took seven minor penalties, the solutions aren’t hard to pinpoint with a must-win Game 6 set for Mother’s Day in Edmonton.

Even the opposition could sense that the Oilers weren’t going to be the better team in Game 5.

“They didn’t have the same jump they had in Game 4 … and I think our players sensed it,” Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy said after the game. “They just didn't have the same drive and intensity they had up there. The physicality that they showed in Game 4 wasn't quite as evident.

“That's how our feeling was on the bench, that we can grab hold of this because they weren't dominating or pushing us out of the game.”

It's Over In Toronto

05/13/2023 at 5:03am EDT

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

The time has come for change. You can’t wait any longer on this failed plan. The question that Bibic, the CEO of Bell, and Staffieri the CEO of chief rival Rogers and the sporting voice of Rogers, the ubiquitous prodigal son Edward, need to deal with first is the status of club president Brendan Shanahan....

If Shanahan is kept as president, he will then have to present something of a new plan to Bibic, Staffieri and the rest of the board of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. That involves general manager Kyle Dubas, whose contract expires shortly. That involves the status of head coach Sheldon Keefe, who like his team has had terrific regular season success and a lack of production when it mattered most.

If Dubas is back, he may want Keefe back as coach. But in fairness, you can’t do that now. The Leafs finished the playoffs winning one of five games at home, scoring 14 goals in their final seven games, outplaying the opposition in maybe three, possibly four of the 11 playoff games the Leafs played.

Yes, Toronto was fortunate to come away with a Round 1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. That was something to celebrate. This series took the celebration out of the most ardent of Leaf followers. This was a kick in the gut for the Leafs. Another year to look the possibilities of it all, and wonder what might have been.

It's Joseph Woll's Net

05/12/2023 at 2:37pm EDT

from Luke Fox of Sportsnet,

We’re not sure which was more impressive, the kid’s ability to lock down a 2-1 win facing elimination, or his composure in doing so.

“I’ve had a good mindset of what I want to pursue in my life, what’s important to me. And when I have that, when I have my groundwork, it’s easy to see everything that happens in life brings you closer to that. I’m just happy to be where I am,” Woll says.

“My mindset doesn't change regardless of what the situation is in the game, and that's the little game within the game I play in my mind.”

Ilya Samsonov skated Friday morning. That’s a first since leaving Sunday’s Game 3 with an upper-body injury.

The net — and all its pressures — belongs to Woll, who until Wednesday had not started a playoff game since March 23, 2019, for the Boston College Eagles.

“Confident but calm in there at all times,” Ryan O’Reilly observes. “It’s so impressive. To come in for that pressure of a game and doing what he did, only gives up one, that’s an amazing thing.”

Adds John Tavares: “You can just see the focus. His preparation, his focus, is elite.”

In attempt to shake the rookie, the Panthers vow to get more shots and more traffic Friday in Game 5.

“He was good,” Aleksander Barkov conceded. “Obviously, we could’ve had more guys at the net to make his job tougher.”

The Edmonton Oilers And Vegas Golden Knight Will Try To Survive Tonight

05/12/2023 at 1:53pm EDT

from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal,

Which team will survive it best? Both the Vegas Golden Knights and the Edmonton Oilers are without their No. 1 d-men for Game 5 of their NHL playoffs series.

Both Alex Pietrangelo and Darnell Nurse have been suspended for a game.

Which team can best cover off the massive hole left in their line-up?

Here’s the deal with Vegas:

Pietrangelo has the most time-on-ice in the playoffs of any Vegas d-man for all situations, even strength, short-handed and power play. He leads the team in time-on-ice per game played at 24:37, more than four minutes more than the next player. That’s a huge hole.

Vegas has used both veteran d-men Ben Hutton, 30, who shoots left, and rookie Brayden Pachal, 21, who shoots right like Pietrangelo.

The Dallas Stars Looking For One More Win

05/12/2023 at 10:53am EDT

from Iain MacxIntyre of Sportsnet,

For hockey teams, a high floor is nice. But a high ceiling is better.

The Seattle Kraken have a high floor. Their talent is balanced, their effort and mindset uniform and consistent. But in terms of players, they haven’t yet built a high ceiling. The Dallas Stars have a soaring, vaulted canopy — pushed skyward by a showpiece top line of Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski.

On Thursday, with the Kraken and Stars tied 2-2 in their National Hockey League playoff series, Seattle was probably the better team. Certainly, they were the dominant one in the first half of Game 5 in Dallas. But the Kraken have no line that can elevate like Hintz, Robertson and Pavelski, who generated two early goals against the run of play and then manufactured the third-period clincher as the Stars won 5-2 to move within one game of the Western Conference Final.

Hintz scored twice and assisted on Pavelski’s goal that made it 3-0 for Dallas 35 seconds into the middle period, moving into a tie with the Edmonton Oilers' Leon Draisaitl for the Stanley Cup Playoffs scoring lead at 18 points through 12 games. And Robertson, the 46-goal scorer from the regular season whose lack of impact through the first three games of the series was concerning, had three assists to make it an eight-point night for the Stars’ No. 1 line.

Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger, pulled in Game 3 as the Kraken took a 2-1 series lead, stopped 29 of 31 shots and looks again like the best goalie still butterflying in the playoffs.

What Could Have Been In Ottawa

05/11/2023 at 11:32pm EDT

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

Ryan Reynolds departure from the sale process of the Ottawa Senators feels like a huge, missed opportunity.

Not only for the Senators, but also for the National Hockey League....

Talk about a sinking feeling....

The decision of the 46-year-old Vancouver-born Reynolds and Christopher Bratty of the Remington Group to pull out of the bidding for the Senators is a blow being felt from Carleton Place to Cumberland.

Two weeks ago, Postmedia reported that the group led by Reynolds and Bratty was poised to make a $1-billion bid (all figures US) for the franchise. That offer was presented to New York-based banker Galatioto Sports Partners around the same time....

It felt like such a good fit. Reynolds spent part of his youth in Vanier and has maintained connections to the city. He has a street named after him and made a large charitable donation to the Ottawa Food Bank during the COVID-19 pandemic with his wife, actress Blake Lively.

Twice Reynolds appeared at home games and people at the Canadian Tire Centre were on their feet when he was shown on the video board. People like Reynolds because he’s relatable, down to earth and has never forgotten his Canadian roots.
