The Vegas Way

03/09/2024 at 6:04am EST

from Jesse Granger of The Athletic,

McCrimmon is well aware of the polarizing reputation he and his organization have acquired.

“Contrary to popular belief, we don’t go after every good player,” he said. “We go after good players we like, good players we identify, and opportunities we identify.”

McCrimmon, Vegas president of hockey operations George McPhee and their pro scouting staff sure seem to like a lot of players.

Mark Stone, Jack Eichel, Max Pacioretty, Ivan Barbashev, Alec Martinez and Chandler Stephenson were all traded for in the last six years. Now, add Hanifin and Hertl to the list.

A lot of front-office executives probably like those players, and with good reason. The difference is that McCrimmon and his staff find a way to get the players they want on their team at an incredible rate — one that is seemingly much higher than other GMs around the NHL.

Why?

“It’s hard to say,” McCrimmon replied. “You have conversations with people and it depends on your approach. We pay. I think that’s part of it. We have made some good deals for other teams as well.”

The Golden Knights haven’t been afraid to send high-end draft picks and prospects out in order to acquire players they believe in, players in the prime of their careers.

Florida Signs Gus Forsling To An Eight-Year Deal

03/07/2024 at 12:00pm EST

via Colby Guy of Florida Hockey Now,

Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito told reporters that the team agreed to an eight-year contract extension with star defenseman Gus Forsling.

Per Elliotte Friedman, the contract will carry an annual cap hit of $5.75 million.

The new contract will kick in during the 2024-25 season.

Forsling, 27, developed into a bonafide top-pairing defenseman since getting claimed off waivers by Florida in 2021.

He has 37 goals and 126 total points with a plus/minus of +120 in 258 games as a Panther.

Forsling made the full-time jump to Florida’s top pair at the start of the 2022-23 season when the team traded MacKenzie Weegar while shouldering No. 1 defenseman minutes while Aaron Ekblad spent time on injured reserve.

Joel Edmundson Traded To Toronto

03/07/2024 at 11:42am EST

Blame Kyle Dubas For The Problems In Toronto

03/07/2024 at 9:36am EST

from Mick Kypreos at the Toronto Star,

In golf, there’s always a chance your friends will let you take a mulligan if you shank one off the tee. It’s really a shame NHL general managers don’t get the same courtesy when making trades.

Certainly Kyle Dubas could have used a few.

Even if it wouldn’t have saved the former Maple Leafs GM his job and earned him the autonomy he was desperately seeking last off-season, it would have left his replacement, Brad Treliving, more cards to play going into Friday’s NHL trade deadline.

Leafs fans have been on quite the transaction ride since Brendan Shanahan took over as president in 2014.

Four GMs — five if you include Mark Hunter’s brief stint as co-interim GM — in the last 10 years have had a crack at shaping the Leafs roster, but no one has had a bigger impact than Dubas.

Before Dubas became the 17th GM in Leafs history, Shanahan’s first few years as president played out as expected. He was there when Dave Nonis dumped key veterans like Cody Franson and Daniel Winnik for significant picks in 2015. Then, with Lou Lamoriello at the helm in 2016, the first significant addition was made to the Shanaplan by trading first- and second-round picks for 27-year-old goalie Frederik Andersen, a move that helped them get back in the playoffs in 2017.

But things took a turn for the worse the day Shanahan put all his faith in Dubas.
