Morning Notes On Hockey

02/11/2024 at 11:22am EST

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- When the Maple Leafs signed Tyler Bertuzzi on the second day of free agency last summer, one of the people involved in his draft and development with the Red Wings predicted it to be a great fit for Toronto.“If you play him with (Auston) Matthews and (Mitch) Marner or with (John) Tavares and (William) Nylander, I think he’ll score 30 goals,” the Detroit voice said. “He’ll make that team better. He’ll go to the hard places on the ice. He’ll bring an element they don’t have.“Look at what he did with Boston in the playoffs (10 points in seven games). I think he’ll do the same thing with the Leafs.”

That was said in July. This is February. Bertuzzi has been a rather dreadful addition to the Leafs. He had just six goals on the season heading into Saturday night. He hasn’t been a physical factor of any real kind. He hasn’t really fit in considering the grand opportunities he has had to play with either Matthews or Tavares. In no way has he justified the $5 million he is being paid to contribute....

- The best 25-and-under players in hockey: Cale Makar in Colorado; Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson in Vancouver; Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt in Jersey; Rasmus Dahlin in Buffalo; Tim Stutzle in Ottawa; Jason Robertson in Dallas; Moritz Seider in Detroit; Robert Thomas in St. Louis; Connor Bedard in Chicago; and Noah Dobson with the Islanders.

A Lost Season For The New Jersey Devils

02/11/2024 at 4:58am EST

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

Maybe ownership and management perceive this as a Gap Year for the Devils, when the players go off on their own pursuits after having put so much work the previous year into not only making the playoffs but winning the first round Battle of the Hudson.

Maybe that is why there has been no material improvement at all to the roster of one of the most disappointing teams in the league, which has been fiddling along below the cut line just about all year.

The goaltending issue that has been allowed to fester has swallowed much of the team’s morale, and it is kind of a surprise that Martin Brodeur, as executive vice president of hockey operations, has, in part, presided over this chaos in the crease.

The Devils rank 32nd, last overall, in save percentage and 30th overall at five-on-five. That goes a long way in explaining the team’s plight — fifth in the wild-card chase — but not entirely, since the Lightning, Avalanche and Hurricanes all have save percentages ranked in the NHL’s bottom five and have not been knee-capped by it....

continued plus more, including topics like this,

Finally, did you hear that the NHL has added to the Blackhawks’ punishment for the organization’s misbehavior as applies to the Kyle Beach sexual assault scandal by awarding Chicago the 2025 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field?

This action, following the 2023 lottery victory that granted the team first-overall draft pick Connor Bedard, should close the book on the disciplinary portion of the program.

And you thought the league wasn’t taking this seriously.

Trade Talk From Pierre LeBrun

02/09/2024 at 9:56am EST

from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,

• The Coyotes haven’t given up hope on making the playoffs and view the next three weeks as critical in forming their decisions ahead of March 8. That goes particularly for pending UFA blueliner Matt Dumba, who carries a $3.9 million AAV. He could be an intriguing name to throw on the market. You might wonder why Arizona would need draft picks — they’ve already got 10 second-round picks over the next three years (!), including three this June — but Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong is a scout at heart and I think he’s pretty high on the 2024 draft class, so adding another pick or two would be of interest to him for sure if his team falls out of it.

• If the Caps fall out of playoff contention, they could be a busy seller with pending UFAs on the roster including Anthony Mantha ($5.75 million AAV), Max Pacioretty ($2 million AAV), Nicolas Aube-Kubel ($1.225 million AAV) and Joel Edmundson ($1.75 million AAV).

It won’t be easy to move Mantha even with retaining salary given his AAV, but Pacioretty and Edmundson are intriguing. For starters, Pacioretty has a 100 percent, full-no move clause, so he and agent Allan Walsh control that process. But my sense is, for the right fit and a chance to chase a Cup, he might waive. Edmundson’s Cup-winning pedigree and cheap AAV will interest a contender in a secondary role.

• David Savard is very much in that Tanev, playoff-warrior mold, helping Tampa win the Cup in 2021. Except he’s not a pending UFA. He’s got another year on his deal next season at a reasonable $3.5 million. That actually could make him more alluring for some teams, who would like him for two playoff runs. While the re-tooling Habs always listen, my understanding is Montreal isn’t committed to trading Savard, who is valued for many reasons inside that organization. So it sounds to me like a team would need to be pretty aggressive there to force things. Which is always a possibility.

* The top two teams in the NHL battled it out Thursday, but the Bruins defeated the Canucks with the help of fast goals to start the first and second period, including Brad Marchand’s tally just 32 seconds into the game – tied for the third-fastest shorthanded goal to start a contest in NHL history.

* The Hockey Fights Cancer fund grew again Thursday as Martin Necas netted a natural hat trick to help the Hurricanes, who hold second place in the Metropolitan Division, earn a victory and gain ground on the idle Rangers. AstraZeneca’s cumulative contribution to the fund so far in 2023-24 is now $330,000. Click here for more information.

32 Thoughts From Elliotte Friedman

02/07/2024 at 8:53pm EST

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

- Very interesting note sent by the NHL on Wednesday, announcing “a comprehensive audit of the hits statistic in every game this season,” and “appropriate adjustments.” (There was also a promise audits will now be done on a nightly basis, to be updated by the next morning.) That led to jokes about teams who inflate these totals, but it was the opposite. Teams were informed that hits per game were adjusted up by almost nine, closer to what we’d seen in previous seasons. What it says is that agents or NHLPA genius Roland Lee, who use these numbers as salary comparables or in arbitration, noticed the drop and pushed for clarity.

- One trend gaining traction is teams destined to pick later in the first round aren’t married to their picks. Vancouver and Winnipeg already moved them. Sportsnet draft gurus Jason Bukala and Sam Cosentino see a drop, and several organizations agree with them.

- I can only imagine how tired Tanev is of this, already. There are a lot of teams interested in him, but it’s a unique market. There are teams who aren’t ready to win this year, but are determined to be a playoff team next year (Ottawa). There are teams who aren’t yet sure if rentals make sense for them (New Jersey). There are teams who like him but find it tricky cap-wise and trade-wise (Boston, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Vancouver). I suspect Dallas lurks, which makes a lot of sense. Undoubtedly, there are others I’m missing. He’s the Taylor Swift of trade deadline coverage.

- When it comes to goalies, Marc-Andre Fleury will have the biggest impact. He’s earned the right to call his shot; nothing happens without his approval. Fleury initially was unhappy to move from Vegas to Chicago, and needed convincing to go to Minnesota. But the guy eats, breathes and loves hockey, so he adapts upon arrival. This screams Carolina, Colorado or Edmonton, all playoff-bound. But, in some of those situations, he wouldn’t be the starter, so that factors in. Again, it’s his call, and deservedly so.

Landing Spots For Chris Tanev

02/07/2024 at 9:13am EST

Julian McKenzie and Shayna Goldman of The Althleic with 8 destinations for Chris Tanev,

As for Tanev, despite the Flames showing some interest in re-sig.ning him, he was placed at No. 2 on Chris Johnston’s latest trade board, and a growing list of teams have been linked to the 34-year-old right-shot defenseman. Per colleague Pierre LeBrun, Tanev was dangled in the Lindholm trade to Vancouver only for the Canucks to balk at the higher price point.

Considering Tanev’s lengthy injury history and his warrior-like style of play, Flames general manager Craig Conroy has every incentive to move him before another injury plummets his value. But even with the injury risks, Tanev is the type of player that GMs covet for playoff runs. A rugged defenseman who can be relied upon to play nearly 20 minutes per game and provide a stabilizing presence at the back end while working with an offensive-minded partner, he’ll block shots and can be used as a penalty killer....

So, with all this interest in Tanev, where might he end up? Here are eight teams that line up as possible landing spots for the veteran defender.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Given the relationship between Conroy and Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving and the history between Tanev and Treliving, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Leafs are on this list. They tried to trade for Tanev and Nikita Zadorov earlier this season before the latter moved to Vancouver, so the interest and desire are there. Toronto’s need for a defenseman remains. There is every reason for this to be a fit.

* The reigning Stanley Cup-champion Golden Knights halted the Oilers’ winning streak at 16 games, becoming the first team to earn a victory against Edmonton in 2024.

* Two pieces of a blockbuster trade that kicked off 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend both made impacts Tuesday as Elias Lindholm tallied twice to help the Canucks extend their point streak to a dozen games and Andrei Kuzmenko scored the fifth-fastest goal by a player in their debut with the Flames as his new club inched closer to a Wild Card spot.

* Three national broadcasts make up Wednesday’s slate, starting with a doubleheader on TNT and Max in the U.S. with the Lightning visiting the Rangers and the Blackhawks welcoming the Wild, as well as the Maple Leafs and Stars going head-to-head across Canada on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

This New Streaming Service Could Be Big

02/06/2024 at 6:47pm EST

from Brian Steinberg of Variety,

It’s a game-changer.

Fox Corp., Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney are set to launch a new streaming joint venture that will make all of their sports programming available under a single broadband roof, a move that will put content from ESPN, TNT and Fox Sports on a new standalone app and, in the process, likely shake up the world of TV sports.

The three media giants are slated to launch the new service in the fall. Subscribers would get access to linear sports networks including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, BTN, TNT, TBS, truTV and ESPN+, as well as hundreds of hours from the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL and many top college divisions. Pricing will be announced at a later date, but the companies will likely look for an monthly subscription that is more than a consumer would pay for a standalone regional sports network, which costs $20 to $30 per month, and less than a larger digital programming package such as Hulu Live or YouTubeTV, which cost around $75 to $80 per month, according to a person familiar with current discussions.

The new joint venture, currently unnamed, is seen as a way for Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery to gain back some of the lucrative affiliate fees they have lost as their cable subscribers have cut the cord ad moved to streaming outlets as their primary source of video entertainment. The new venture would pay its three corporate parents for licensing rights, essentially creating a new distribution partner.

Questions For The All-Stars

02/05/2024 at 9:34am EST

from Greg Wyshynski and Kristen Shilton or ESPN,

NHL All-Star Weekend offers a relaxed atmosphere for players, as they hang with friends and family while taking a break from the 82-game regular-season grind. Which is a perfect opportunity to get some candid answers to an array of questions.

Here are around a dozen All-Stars giving us their takes on an NHL team in Salt Lake City, how they'd change overtime rules, their most coveted pieces of sports memorabilia and how superstitious they are (or are not) and much more.

How would you change NHL overtime rules?

Jake Oettinger, Dallas Stars: I would do a 10-minute overtime. Still 3-on-3. Try that out for a bit. And then if that doesn't work, because everyone likes to keep possession, maybe you do a no over-and-back rule.

Clayton Keller, Arizona Coyotes: I like it how it is. But if there's a penalty, I'd like to see us go 3-on-2 [on the power play] instead of 4-on-3. It think it should be easier to score I guess. You can tee it up from up close.

Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers: I'd keep it the way it is, even if we're not great at it this season. [Laughs.] But I wouldn't change it a whole lot.

Frank Vatrano, Anaheim Ducks: I think the red line should be a blue line. I think they should take both blue lines out and have the red line act as a blue line. It would open the zone more. When you see guys taking it back, it's all about possession. So take the blue lines out and have the red line be the blue line for both sides.

Morning Line -Mark Madden

“I don’t like the notion that these guys are representing their country,” Madden said. “You want to represent your country, join the army. This is just a hockey tournament, and (1980 Team USA coach) Herb Brooks agreed with me. In fact, he said all that first, (just) not in so many words.”

Madden also predicts the situation with Russia might remain sticky as well.

“Unless Russia plays, it’s a meaningless tournament. I know everybody has their knickers in a twist over them attacking Ukraine. I don’t like to see sports and politics mix,” Madden said. “I mean, they’re the No. 2 hockey power ever besides Canada, and arguably No. 1. What kind of tournament is it if they’re not involved? The same goes for that phony-baloney 4 Nations cup they’re having next year.”

* The Islanders-Maple Leafs game is one of several national broadcasts slated for this week, which includes the Oilers looking to tie the NHL record for longest winning streak when they face the reigning Stanley Cup-champion Golden Knights on Tuesday.

Buyer Beware

02/04/2024 at 9:38am EST

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

The market has been set early, and first-rounders are the currency of the day for contenders seeking to fortify themselves with rentals ahead of the March 8 trade deadline.

There was a first-rounder going in a package from Vancouver to Calgary for Elias Lindholm — as the surprising, first-overall Canucks take aim at the first Cup in the franchise’s 54-year history. The price point was expected and justifiable for the most desired center on the market.

There was also a first-rounder going Montreal’s way from Winnipeg in exchange for rental center Sean Monahan — as the surprising Jets attempted to keep up with the Canucks by acquiring a nice comeback story whose price was surely inflated by market forces.

The Canadiens, of course, had already received a first-rounder over the summer of 2022 to take the final year of Monahan’s contract off Calgary’s books when the center carried a cap hit of $6.375 million.

The Habs’ front office team of Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes got Calgary coming and got Winnipeg going. Not bad work.

So there are going to be more first-rounders tossed around as activity accelerates. Teams that fancy themselves contenders will pay the price, and perhaps even less reluctantly in the current landscape under which there is no clear-cut favorite to win the title.

But here is the reality. Since the cap went into effect in 2005-06, four teams have won the Cup after trading away their first-rounders proximate to the deadline, but just two won after trading their first-rounder for a rental.

This & That In The Hockey World

02/04/2024 at 8:49am EST

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- Before our very eyes, Sidney Crosby has grown into a walking, talking, skating example of everything that is possible in hockey. No one of his generation has anywhere near his list of accomplishments:

Three Stanley Cup wins. Two Olympic gold medals. Two Hart Trophies. Two scoring titles. Two Rocket Richard awards. And maybe the craziest part of all, he appears to be doing the impossible and defeating Father Time.

This is Crosby’s 19th National Hockey League season and probably one of his most complete. He has become LeBron James on ice, contending for the Hart on a Pittsburgh Penguins team still trying to find itself. And heading to this all-star break, he has been among the best players in the game....

- NHL stars seem genuinely excited about the possibility of Auston Matthews scoring 70 goals for the first time in more than 30 NHL seasons. And they should be. But consider the team nature of hockey: Crosby is having a sensational season and there is no assurance the Penguins will make the playoffs. Matthews is having a generational scoring season and the Maple Leafs have not had an impressive first half of the season. Kucherov is the league’s dominant scorer and Tampa Bay has struggled. And McDavid’s numbers are down slightly and Edmonton has won its past 16 games.

- Carter Hart would have been a candidate to be the Team Canada goaltender at the next Olympic Games. But that doesn’t matter now. Nor should it. You have to wonder if Hart will ever play another NHL game. He is one of five players from the 2018 junior Team Canada who have been charged with sexual assault in London, Ont. More details should emerge on Monday when police hold their first news conference on the subject.

- There are at least 12 NHL teams, maybe more, looking to acquire a defenceman of some quality between now and next month’s NHL trade deadline. Problem is, a GM tells me, there may be only two or three top- four defencemen available, if that. “That means a lot of us won’t be getting what we want,” said the GM. The Calgary Flames are in a terrific position with Chris Tanev available and there seem to be suitors everywhere for the soon-to-be free agent.

Players Get Their Wish With Return To The Olympics

02/03/2024 at 9:08am EST

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

So the league that should have set the template for international competition and having a global presence is back in the best-on-best business and that is news worthy of celebration.

For while the Stanley Cup reigns supreme, the dirty secret is that Bobby Orr flying through the air on that Boston afternoon in May 1970 is a mere footnote attached to a list of hockey’s greatest moments that were forged on the world stage.

There’s never been anything as dramatic as the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the USSR in which Paul Henderson grabbed on to the brass ring of immortality. Unless we are talking about the “They’re Going Home!” game at the Spectrum between the Flyers and the Red Army in January of ’76. Or maybe the 1980 Miracle On Ice Olympics in Lake Placid.

How about the 1996 World Cup best-of-three final round in which Team USA took out Canada in the final minutes of the decisive match in Montreal to win its lone best-on-best title on Brett Hull’s disputed goal that Glen Sather still refuses to recognize? Of course there are the 2010 Games in Vancouver that featured Sidney Crosby’s overtime Golden Goal.
