When the Cow Came Home

03/07/2007 at 5:47am EST

Part 1: Jeff Cowan

There aren’t too many things cooler than watching an undervalued 4th line player score at will for three games straight, making himself one of the stars of the night at every opportunity. I mean, 5 goals in three games? Talk about a hot hand, especially for a player who hadn’t scored in the previous 14 years.2

The NHL’s official pre-games notes stated that The Cowman3 had established a new career single game record after scoring two goals in the second period on March 4th versus Minnesota. The Canucks forward also tied a personal best with two points in that game.

And then tonight he does it again. Show-off or late developer?

Part 2: Trivial Canucks Notes

—Tampa has never won a game at GM Place. Ever. Tuesday night gave Vancouver a home record of 8-0-2 lifetime against the Bolts.

—Tuesday was Vancouver’s last game of the season against the Eastern Conference. The Canucks record is 8-1-1 for 2006-07.4

—The Canucks were a perfect 5-0-0 against the Southeast Division this season.

—Roberto Luongo got his 38th win of the season, tying the Canucks record set by Kirk McLean in 1991-92.

—The Canucks have 8 home, 8 road games left. Can anything go wrong?5

—The Canucks have gone 22-4-4 since December 26th.

—Since Daniel and Henrik Sedin’s rookie season the Canucks record is 111-36-17 when the twins each record at least one point during a game.

—Vancouver’s record when leading after 2 periods is now 23-1-3.6

FOOTNOTES:

1 My plans to celebrate the minimalist greatness that is Martin St. Louis were put to pasture upon the traumatic (and nearly-irrevocable) disaster of an exploding sewer system. In my HOUSE. I might never recover from the trauma of this plumbing disaster, but all is well now after cleaning everything in sight for 36 straight hours. God, I feel queasy…

2 Not strictly true.

3 The Yankee Canuck was insisting on this nickname when drunk a couple nights ago. Though sober at the time myself, I was somehow persuaded it might work. Thoughts?

4 Though obviously they’re destined to meet an Eastern Conference team in the Stanley Cup finals.

5 Yes it could. But it would be paranoid to worry about it, for godsakes. Relax.

6 You don’t even need to watch the game anymore. Just head to bed early. (Well, every night except this night; 3 goals in the 3rd. Holy.)

P.S. Just a final thought—did you know that when you search for “flying cow” in google’s image database, there are no less than 2,750 image matches? I can’t be the only person who finds that fascinating.

P.P.S. It’s possibly also worth mentioning that I put that cow image together after a couple glasses of wine tonight. Or perhaps that was self-evident.
