We Win in 7 -- Then and Now

05/03/2007 at 4:00pm EDT

imageOn Tuesday night, Dev won the “prize” for the best freaked-out comment from the game thread. His prize/penance was to write Canucks’ fans a few words of encouragement as Vancouver faces Anaheim in tonight’s must-win game. Good sport that he is, Dev dug deep and found inspiration for us by flashing back to the past, to predict the future.

I’ll put up some game notes later, but I loved Dev’s contribution to start the day.

Ok…so I’ve started drinking early in preparation for tonight’s game. And I still find words that restore my faith in the hockey gods hard to find….so instead, I’ll just write the result of game 7 on May 8th and maybe some special voodoo will make it a reality.

We win in 7… Then and Now

April 30, 1994
Pavel Bure scores at 2:20 of the second overtime period to give Vancouver a 4-3 win over Calgary and the club’s third straight overtime win in a come-from-behind seven game playoff series. It is Vancouver’s first seven game playoff series win.

May 8, 2007
Jan Bulis scores at 7:23 of the first overtime period to give Vancouver a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. This victory caps the Canucks stunning recovery from the very brink of elimination having dropped to a 3-1 deficit in the series against the Ducks on May 1.

Ok, so there’s my take on how the future *should* look.

In reality, they’ve a huge task ahead, but the Canucks have proven they can play with and beat these guys. A bounce of the puck or a powerplay goal or a bit of luck for Bulis, Smolinski or Hansen and the Canucks are the team with 3 wins. If the Canucks come out in the first like they have in the last two games, and it if they remember that their season ends if they lose this one; if they can do these two things they will win.

They have to believe. They have to win.

Note: For some words that actually are inspiring check out this retelling of the 1994 run for the cup.

Just skip the ending. ;)
