From Chloé Fedio at the Toronto Stara story today about one man’s plan to own the Leafs… with a million other shareholders across the country. At Darren Thompson’s site, he outlines his plan:
Rather than a megalith company such as Rogers Communications putting in a bid for the estimated $1.3 billion worth of shares that the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is floating for its 66% stake, Thompson says ordinary people coast to coast could beat out the big boys if they unite.
Thompson’s off-the-wall plan is for one million Canadians to invest $1,000 to put into a new fund that would get in the bidding for control of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. There’s a cool billion right there.
“Why couldn’t every single Canadian have an ownership in that fund?,” Thompson told the newspaper. “My thought was I’ve always wanted to own my own professional sports team and when I talk to sports fans, it’s always one of the dreams that comes up. Haven’t you always wanted to say you own part of an NHL team?”
