What does Vancouver need? Whothehellknows. Everyone has a different opinion, from star offensive player, to journeyman defensive depth. But one reality dominates all -- the Canucks have very little money to play with.Anyway, unsubstantiated rumors anyone?Rumor #1 -- 10:17 a.m. Hockey Futures Board: "The Canucks are about to announce a deal picking up defenceman Jamie Heward from the Washington Capitals." (note: canucks.com thread here)Update note 10:45 am PT: the fun part of a rumor like this is noticing that Heward is playing in the Capitals/Devils game at this very moment. As one HF poster noted, "will he be coming out in the 2nd period wearing a Canucks jersey?" Good times, this rumor business. Good times.Rumor #2 --Bob McKenzie, TSN: a rumor mongering thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning Bob's notion (Feb.24) that Vancouver ranks high on the list of teams looking to sign Georges Laraque. (Not a freakin' chance, if you ask me...)Rumor #3 --Terry Frei, Denver Post (via Spector): "Scouts from eight NHL teams attended the Avalanche-Kings game Saturday night at the Staples Center, which might - or not - turn out be a hint of things to come before Tuesday's trading deadline." Only 3 of those teams were likely playoff contenders, and one of those teams was Vancouver. (Mildly interesting. And Spector notes that players who may be on the trading block in that game are Brent Sopel, Aaron Miller, Ossi Vaananen, Ken Klee and Ian Laperriere)

NOTE: GM Dave Nonis on PPV interview, February 25: Did not seem to rule out that he would give up Luc Bourdon or Cory Schneider in a trade, BUT insisted it wouldn't be for a rent-a-player situation. It would require getting as-good or better young players back in return. (Surprises me. I thought those two were virtually untouchable.)

Rumor #4 -- Feb 25 Sourced in Hell: Vancouver trades prospect Luc Bourdon and defenseman Sami Salo for a Bill Guerin and a conditional pick in 2008!! (Yeah, kidding -- just making sure you're paying attention...)
