The Commodore 64 War

07/11/2011 at 7:33pm EDT

So, I take a weekend completely off the clock and away from hockey, and what happens while I’m gone? Puck Daddy and A2Y managed to end up in some kind of Commodore 64 War.

First off, from an outsider’s point of view, it kind of looks like The Chief has acquired a stalker. I mean, getting called “the piece of garbage that runs the worst hockey blog on the internet” sorta crosses the line from ‘dislike’, storms past ‘creepy’ and closes in on Fatal Attraction territory, no? Glenn Close, a pair of scissors and a bunny, all rolled into what looks like a bit of a hockey blogger meltdown.

Ryan Lambert’s comment in full:

Not that I’m going to plug them, but the piece of garbage that runs the worst hockey blog on the internet is trying to organize a campaign AGAINST the Commodore 64 thing. Because, he says, he doesn’t want Commodore — A RED WING!!!! — to be a “gimmick.” (Ignoring the fact that throwing an octopus and singing along to a Journey song are absolutely gimmicks, because why allow logic to enter into any such debate?) And also, presumably, because he hates charity.

Hates charity? Yeah, logic seems to be faring really well in this whole debate…

And all of that just because A2Y doesn’t like the Commodore 64 name plan from the Yahoo! Sports Puck Daddy crew? Good lord, my 1 year old daughter hasn’t figured out how to have a tantrum quite that pointless yet.

About the Commodore 64 debate, I personally think it would be a cool number choice for MC, but A2Y obviously disagrees, and has his own reasons. Fine. Whatever. Why would I care?

As for those accusing him and his 19 of taking themselves too seriously, check out your own mirror… when it comes to hockey, we ALL take this crap too seriously sometimes. Lordy, some of the Chicago hockey media alone almost flipped the earth’s axis with their over-the-top editorial freakouts every other day of the Canucks’ playoff run. (I don’t think I’ll be able to read a Chicago paper ever again without needing a valium with a whiskey chaser to settle my nerves.)

But the truth is, everyone has issues about their team that they feel passionate about… reasonable or not. Consider the fact that we, as a bunch of grown-ass adults, spend hundreds and hundreds of hours watching and discussing a bunch of other grown-ass adults slap a black rubber disc around some frozen water. And we all think this actually MATTERS?

Well, it doesn’t. But that’s hockey fandom, and we enjoy it anyway. And anyone who says they have never had a passionate opinion about anything related to their favourite team, they’re either a saint or a lying liar. Pants on fire.

So if the Winged Wheel brigade does or doesn’t want a 64 slapped on a Detroit jersey, what the hell does it matter so much to Ryan Lambert and the Puck Daddy crew?

—A2Y has already addressed this in his own shrinking-violet sort of way. (*cough*)
—Ryan Lambert states people are forwarding him comments from Bill’s site for him to ridicule. So I guess we’re supposed to be clear that it’s not like he is reading those comments himself into the wee hours of the night. (Gotcha.)

Incidentally, Puck Daddy’s efforts to raise money for charity in this whole situation are certainly noble. I hope those who’ve pledged money follow through, regardless.
