SCF Ticket Prices Would Break My Bank

05/27/2011 at 4:25pm EDT

Out of curiosity yesterday, I was perusing Craigslist for Vancouver Canucks tickets, and mused on Twitter, wondering who—in these days of home foreclosures, job losses, and various other difficult economic realities—can afford to spend $500+ for a single seat at a hockey game?

Certainly not me. But clearly, plenty of other people. And apparently $500 is a bargain for some. Today, StubHub.com sent me their own breakdown of the cost and demand for tickets for these Stanley Cup Finals by customers using their service, and the numbers are ridiculous.

Fans are paying on

average $924 per ticket

for the potential four games in Vancouver

  • Low end purchased has been $400 for Game 1– 2 each at this price for the Upper Bowl Goal 319
  • High end purchased has been $4500 for a potential Game 5 – 2 each at this price for Club 105

A few more random facts:

  • The majority of buyers thus far across North America are from British Columbia, California, then Alberta
  • Prices are trending higher than they were at this time last year – largely due to the lack of inventory
  • At this time last year, fans were paying an average price of $711 for the games in Chicago
  • At this time last year, fans were paying an average price of $521 for the games in Philly

Finally, Stubhub also examined the average prices and the number of tickets purchased via their service during the 2010 season and found the Canadian teams to be the priciest (with Pittsburgh being an outlier). Check out the chart below:
