Open Post for Game 2: Canucks vs Sharks

05/18/2011 at 9:39pm EDT

Puck drops for Game 2 of the Canucks and Sharks at 6pm PT.

Something for Canucks fans to think about. In San Jose Sharks’ playoff history:

——When the Sharks trail a series 0-1, their record is 4-9.
——When the Sharks trail a series 0-2, their record is 0-8

So, for the Sharks, losing this game is a deathblow, historically.

Conversely, when the Sharks are tied in a series 1-1, they’ve gone on to claim victory 7-4 times. Like I said, something to think about.

Now, a few bits on Mr. Joe “Let’s start the series off with a bang” Thornton…

A lot has been written in the last couple days about Ryan Kesler’s and Joe Thornton’s near-fight at center ice, just as the puck dropped in game 1. Ryan Kesler brushed off the challenge at the time, and remarked later, “If (Thornton) wants to fight me, obviously I play him four times a year—he can fight me next year.”

Meanwhile,it turns out we can flash back a couple years—to the last time Joe Thoronto dropped the gloves—and his tactics on Sunday have an element of deja vu.

According to HockeyFights.com, Joe Thornton’s last fight was in 2009. In game 6 of the playoffs vs the Anaheim Ducks, he fought Ryan Getzlaf right as the puck dropped in the opening.

Video:

Maybe we should be flattered Thornton decided to start this in game 1 with the Canucks. That fight with Getzlaf? His team was already down 3-2 in the series. And they lost it all that night. :)
