Increasingly Annoying Alex Burrows Rumors

03/02/2009 at 9:34pm EST

There’s a lot of worry and wonder about whether Alex Burrows is on the trade block—primarily courtesy of Pierre LeBrun on HNIC this past weekend (or, as French Canadian Burrows calls him, “that Frenchman”)—and the Canucks popped up a video today with some players’ reaction to the rumors.

Personally, I think there’s almost no chance Mike Gillis has any intention of trading Burrows. He’s currently dirt cheap, and although he’s about to get a very healthy contract in the near future, it’s not going to be anything insane.

Furthermore, Burrows has been one of the best players on the team this season—arguably, the best player along with Ryan Kesler—for long stretches of the year. Add to that the fact that coach Alain Vigneault is clearly a big fan of the guy (one of only two things he and I agree on; the other is poutine—it’s awesome) and that the Canucks are obviously taking their playoff hopes very, very seriously this year (witness the Mats Sundin partial 1-year contract insanity), and it’s hard to imagine Gillis is going to lose a sure-thing in exchange for some overpriced “star” that may not even click with the team.

I might be wrong. This is the Canucks after all, a team capable of astonishing-stupidity (not unlike most NHL teams). But all things considered, I say ‘quit worrying; Burrows isn’t going anywhere.’
