Canucks to Give Up Their First Round Pick?

06/11/2008 at 11:56am EDT

From The Fourth Period, this rumor:

In an attempt to acquire an impact player, the Vancouver Canucks are actively dangling the 10th overall selection in this month’s draft as trade bait. According to a Vancouver source, the Canucks are looking to obtain an NHL-ready talent who will make an immediate impact on the team. The Canucks’ first-round draft pick is believed to be available, as well as other team assets and players.

That other players are available as bait is obvious, but giving up that first round draft choice would be a bit surprising. To me, anyway.

In a Draft as deep as this one is expected to be, that pick is gold for a team with a history of drafting disasters. A young prospect with long-term potential is hard to miss in the first round, by all accounts. So giving up such a pick would demand a pretty impressive player in return.

Who would you want for him?

Meanwhile, Tony Gallagher proposes a stroke of retaliation on the Flyers by stealing away Jeff Carter.

Interesting, but since Gallagher is having a month of imagining dark conspiracies behind the wizard’s curtain, I won’t bet on anything he has to say right now.
