Canucks in the Playoffs

04/10/2008 at 6:40pm EDT

I spent most of the 2007-08 season snarkily referring to the Vancouver Canucks as ‘the best AHL team in the NHL’. Well, it turns out there was more truth to that than just my fatalistic humor, because now that they’re all actually playing in the AHL, they seem to have found their niche.

On a soon-to-be-determined date, the Manitoba Moose will be opening the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs against the Syracuse Crunch, and with a notable list of players that spent a good amount of time in Vancouver this year. Including:

Jason Jaffray (19 Canucks games this season),
Rick Rypien (22 games)
Mike Brown (19 games)
Nathan McIver (17 games)
Luc Bourdon (27 games)
Jannik Hansen (5 games).*

(*I believe I’m missing a few others here, who played a handful of games.)

And if that’s not enough, the Victoria Salmon Kings—the Canucks ECHL partner—are also heading to the playoffs: the National Conference Kelly Cup playoff series begins tonight. [note: more on that series here]

So if you’re a Canucks fan and haven’t figured out which NHL team to sell your soul to for this playoff season, maybe consider the boys in the minors.

After all, Alain Vigneault isn’t their coach so they might actually know what the word “offense” means.

And since the Curse of Vancouver hockey hell doesn’t rest on their heads, they might actually have a chance.
