Canuck Injury Updates, Plus the Ohlund Trade Rumors

10/27/2008 at 11:28pm EDT

Some bad news earlier today in the form of Rick Rypien’s impending surgery but the day had an upside. It seems Vancouver is running an Injured Canuck Exchange Program rather than simply a one-way train to the infirmary, as Sami Salo went through yet another full practice and could be back as early as Tuesday.

From the Canucks:

“I feel good so it’s up to the coaching staff and the training staff and see what they think because we have to play three games in four nights so we don’t want to rush back in just to play one game,” said Salo.

Indeed. And since the next game is tomorrow’s matchup against Boston, it might not be the best date for Salo’s return. I’m always joking that Salo is made of glass—and we now know explicitly the kind of damage Milan Lucic can do to glass.

The same story on the Canucks website also brought up the Mattias-Ohlund-to-Ottawa rumors today:

Gillis explicitly stated that he has no intention on trading Ohlund and although the speculation appears to be growing, he isn’t concerned with hearsay.

“There’s always speculation with guys in the last year of their contract because they’ve become the most tradable players so I’m not surprised about it.”

And as far as trading the Canucks veteran?

“We would never do anything like that with a player with Mattias’ stature with a no-trade clause without going to him in advance and making sure that it was something that he wanted and that we wanted. We wouldn’t do it that way.”

Methinks that little NTC is getting forgotten a lot in the rumor mongering going around.

Kinda hard to broker deals behind a player’s back when you have no way to move him without his explicit permission.
