A Night for Fans to Shine

06/15/2011 at 5:46pm EDT

“We talked on the bench during Game 5 about how energized our crowd was. [...] But we’ve been talking about how during the whole Final that the building’s been rocking. Game 5 was just non-stop noise and every single play, bump and hit got a great reaction. We were really impressed with the fans and how they delivered in that game and we’re going to need that and more tonight.”

—Canucks backup Corey Schneider in his blog today

Having attended that game 5, I can attest to the crowd’s ‘presence’ (if that’s the right word?) in that game. The entire experience and atmosphere was electric in a way I’d never experienced in the past, never having attended a Stanley Cup Final before.

Unfortunately I won’t be attending the game tonight, but I trust the 19,000 Canucks fans who will be in the building and the 100,000-ish on the streets will make enough noise to blow the roof off Vancouver tonight.

I hope it’s a great night for Canucks fans (and I’m optimistic, for reasons I mentioned yesterday) but if it’s the Bruins contingent celebrating at the end, I’ll at least take heart in the fact that their fans have also been waiting a very long time for a night like tonight. (Not as long as us, dammit, but… I’ll try and be a good sport about it!)

Whatever else you might say about how this series has unfolded, it’s certainly been a memorable experience. And while I won’t miss the darker side of it—like bitchy-psycho emails and tweets from people that I can only assume are too insecure to keep their mean-spirited craziness to themselves—I will miss the rest of it. All the genuine fans of both sides who’ve been having a good time, poking fun at each other while we all dream of the Cup.

Have fun tonight, everyone. And be safe!

And those of you in Vancouver, please be gracious hosts to the Bruins fans you meet tonight. I saw the best of Vancouver in that respect, when out on the streets downtown last Friday, and I hope that continues tonight. I know there’s always a jackass in every crowd… but I know the rest of you will do the city proud. :)
