Canucks Free Agency Thrills, in summary—
Negatives:
- The Canucks lay their bets on Backes. That didn’t work out so well.
- Canucks throw $20,000,000 at Mats Sundin. But even that isn’t enough money to play for Vancouver these days
Positives:

A $7.5 million deal. From TSN:
The Vancouver Canucks have signed RFA David Backes to an offer sheet for three years at $2.5 million per year. Compensation is a second round pick. St. Louis must match within seven days or he goes to Vancouver.
Update 1:15pm PT: A press release from the St. Louis Blues provides more details.
“We will review the offer and base our decision on what is best for our organization,” said Davidson.
Backes’ offer includes a $1 million signing bonus along with $1.5 million in 2008-09, $2.5 million in 2009-10 and $2.5 million 2010-11.
Update 3:00pm PT: A new press release from the Blues states that the Blues are matching the Canucks’ offer and keeping Backes.
Sorry, Gillis.
