Filip Zadina takes Mantha’s spot on the right flank on one of the power-play units. Zadina made his Red Wings season debut in Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Carolina, a game in which Detroit had only just power play, in the final three minutes of the game.
“Filip Zadina is a shooter similar to Anthony Mantha, so can he fill a similar-type role?” coach Jeff Blashill said. “I’m not saying he’s going to do what Anthony did, but can he fill a similar-type role? We’re just trying to put guys in spots where hopefully they can be successful. We need both units to be clicking at a high rate.”
The Red Wings’ are 28th in the league on the power play (11 for 81, 13.6 percent).
Zadina turned 20 today, a reminder that he’s still young despite the lofty expectations from being the sixth overall pick in 2018.
“That’s important for everybody to remember,” Blashill said. “It’s hard. A lot of guys are able to stay at lower levels and come in and you don’t see them have to go through the growing pains that a guy like Filip, a guy who comes in early, ultimately had to do.
