Michael Rasmussen’s first NHL fight provided a bit of a spark during a strong second period, but it didn’t give his team enough push to complete the comeback in a 4-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators at Little Caesars Arena.
The key moment happened when four Red Wings forming a box around Jimmy Howard when they should have boxed out Mark Stone.
Stone snuck in, spotted a loose puck under Howard and swept it into the net at 7:08 of the third period to snap a 2-2 tie.
“That’s a tough one,” Dylan Larkin said. “Little bit of a broken play. We think Howie has it and Stone doesn’t give up on the play, so they get the goal.”
Said Niklas Kronwall: “I got to do a better job there of boxing out. I think everyone thought he had it, but obviously he didn’t. If we just do our job and box out, that doesn’t happen.”
