"Right now, we're playing a little too soft on the outside and it's too easy for their Ds to box us out and keep us away from there," Frans Nielsen said. "We got to fight to get in there and we got to be more desperate around the net and get there."
Lack of net presence is one reason the Red Wings have scored only nine goals and remain winless (0-2-2).
It was the focus of Friday's meeting before practice. Coach Jeff Blashill said he showed six clips, four where they weren't good enough and two where they did exactly what they should have.
"We got to do a better job of getting to the net and not letting the goalie see the puck, not just on shots but on passes (too)," Blashill said. "That goal where (Luke Glendening) goes underneath, gets right on the top of the blue paint, causes havoc and then (Nick) Jensen scores, it's all from having net-front presence.
