The kind of trade he hasn’t done in years is a pure hockey trade. He hasn't completed a trade motivated simply by moving one NHL player for another NHL player in an attempt to bring two rosters together and make a fit that helps both teams. They’re not easy deals to make.

It's all a long way of getting us to an interesting suggestion raised by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman in his weekly “31 Thoughts” column. This column is a treasure trove of useful league-wide information and he dropped a line in there that was certainly noticed by Red Wings fans at thought No. 2: “Trade that might make sense only to me: something around Justin Faulk from Carolina to Detroit for Andreas Athanasiou.”...
“I think both of those players are available for a hockey deal,” said one NHL source outside of Detroit and Carolina. “You could definitely see Carolina doing something.”
Another source pointed out that another contract negotiation with Athanasiou this offseason in a time when the Red Wings also have to get deals done with Dylan Larkin and Mantha might make a deal more of a possibility...
