Why Jonatan Berggren Wasn't Recalled

04/26/2022 at 2:08pm EDT

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Berggren led the Griffins with 60 points (including 20 goals), setting the franchise’s rookie scoring record. His 40 assists also are the most-ever by a Griffins rookie.

“Berggren’s had a good year down there,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “At the end of the day, the decision on Jonatan Berggren is a decision made on what’s best for his individual development. That’s a decision (general manager) Steve Yzerman makes and no different than what I talked about with Moritz Seider.

“We were in a similar position (in 2019-20), where Moritz could’ve come up right around this same time and the decision was made to leave him down in the American League and let him continue to finish the year out. Ultimately, it looks like that was a good decision. And I think it would be a similar case here with Berggren. Those are decisions made solely on what’s best for his long-term development.”

Berggren, a highly skilled winger drafted 33rd overall in 2018, was coming off a strong season with Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (45 points in 49 games), following two injury-plagued years

About Abel to Yzerman

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
