Jonathan Bernier could draw interest at the trade deadline from a playoff-contending team seeking goaltending depth or insurance, or one needing to replace an injured netminder.
The Detroit Red Wings might even get a second-round pick for the impending unrestricted free agent.
General manager Steve Yzerman, over the next month, must decide if the return would be worth weakening the club for the remainder of the season, because the Red Wings are much better with Bernier in net.
They showed it again Thursday in a 6-4 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena.
Bernier made 40 saves to improve to 7-5-0. That is a remarkable record for a team that is 8-16-3 at the midway mark of the season.
“He’s our best player. He gives us a chance to win every single night,” defenseman Troy Stecher said. “We wouldn’t be in the position we’re in without him. He’s a heck of a goalie, he gives us a fighting chance every night. We have great appreciation for him as a group.”
