The Detroit Red Wings will have some extra time to get back in game shape and get familiar with the half-dozen new players they added in the offseason.
The seven non-playoff teams, off since March 10, likely will start training camp sooner than the rest of the NHL. It remains to be seen when that will be.
“I think at this point, the non-playoff teams will get some type of earlier start,” Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said. “I’m not sure it’ll be 14 days; more realistically it might be a week. I think it’s part of the plan between the (NHL Players Association) and the league of trying to get back to work.”
