from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman invested a lot of money in several free agents this past summer to improve at all positions, upgrade depth and push the rebuild further along.

Three games in, the team is seeing results.

The Red Wings (2-0-1) have gained five out of six points and the newcomers are having a significant impact.

Theyve been huge additions, coach Derek Lalonde said. As a free agent, you choose to sign here in the middle of trying to build something you know what you signed up for, so theres a little will in that. I think theyve accepted that challenge, or that reality of why they chose to come here. Theyre helping us along with that process.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

After Monday's 5-4 overtime loss to Los Angeles, a staggering 10 different players have scored goals, led by David Perron's team-leading three.

General manager Steve Yzerman's decision to sign free agents such as Perron, Dominik Kubalik and Andrew Copp have broadened the offense over four lines and given the Wings threats to score throughout the lineup.

"Obviously you need depth scoring to go deep into any season or playoff, so its good to see early on," Perron said. "Everybody is going to keep adding to our game. We're starting to play the right way more and more. It was great to see that fight in the third period (Monday) to get that one (goal) back and get a big point."

All four lines have contributed, at various parts in the three games, on offense. Even without Tyler Bertuzzi (upper body, out four to six weeks) and Jakub Vrana (personal reasons) in the lineup against Los Angeles, the Wings were able to field a lineup that was potent and supply offense against a good defensive Kings team.

Defensemen Ben Chiarot and Olli Maatta have chipped in offensively as well, maybe somewhat surprisingly, with Maatta tied with Perron with four points after three games (one goal, three assists).

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press on the Larkin play last night,

"I got pretty emotional about it driving home," Larkin said. "Its something that, it means a lot. I was a little bit upset, I felt I kind of cost the team in overtime, I took a long shift and kind of threw the puck away.

"The care level is there. Its easy to kind of skate back and be pissed off. You lost by two and break your stick over the post and try and show the guys how mad you are. I just think it means so much more that it was kind of a lucky play, but that it wasnt shot in the net. We didnt give up on it. The reaction from the fans, the reaction from the guys after we scored."...

"I see the play develop," Lalonde said. "A little bit of a bad bounce in the neutral zone, we just got our six out there. Had to pull them without possession because of the situation. It ends up, you see Arvidsson going in all alone. You think, game over. And he makes this amazing effort play and it gives you a little spark.

"I talked to Dylan this morning. It felt like that play was symbolic of what we are trying to do. Never give up, fight through things. He did it and we got rewarded for it. A good moment to build off."

Every time I hear him talk, I like Derek more. Soft spoken, determined, cerebral guy. No wonder Stevie likes him!

Chet

These guys play and sacrifice for each other. Last night even in an OT loss was such a revelation. Totally new culture and yea, they needed it.

rwbill

That was an Yzerman kind of never-give-up-on-a-shift play.

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
